Situated on an air field, the vast site is home to more than 170 different types of aircraft, as well as Cold War-era artefacts like spy equipment, uniforms and weapons. Pose for photos next to the most impressive planes, and then spend time at leisure in the museum before returning to Moscow.

Leave your central Moscow hotel and start your journey to Monino, a small town east of the capital. As you travel in the comfort of your luxury minibus, your driver will talk to you about your destination of the day: the Central Air Force Museum. One of the world’s largest aircraft museums, the building covers some 49 acres (20 hectares) – about the equivalent of 18 football pitches – meaning there’s a lot of aviation history to discover inside.

On arrival, head straight in and start exploring with your guide – a translator. Many Russian museums don’t allow photos to be taken inside, but your entrance ticket has a special photo permission, meaning you can snap as many photos of vintage air planes and helicopters as you like!

The most interesting part of the museum is a section dedicated to aircraft from the time of the Cold War – planes that impressed and frightened most of the world at the time. See Ilya Muromets, the largest aircraft of the 20th century, and Tupolev-144 – a Soviet-era SST (Supersonic Transport Aircraft). Hear tales from your pilot guide about the days when these planes were used and see Cold War-era spy equipment and artefacts, too.

After your walking tour, enjoy some free time inside the Central Air Force Museum to explore at your own pace. Besides the aircraft and artefacts on show, the museum is also home to a large library, showing films (with English subtitles) about the planes.

Return to your minibus at the pre-arranged time, and return to central Moscow with your driver. Your tour ends back at your Moscow hotel.

Difficult to review. If you are like me, someone who is interested in Russian aviation, this tour is highly informative, in a truly non- westernised manner. Clearly if aviation isn't your thing, it's a very expensive day trip. With regards to the running of the tour; on the positive side it is truly private, just you, a somewhat fluent translator and the driver. The car to the Monino was a very luxurious Mercedes. However, there were also negatives. to start, they didn't turn up on the designated day, providing no reasoning just arriving the next day. Also, it must be pointed out that Russian driving standards are shocking, amplified in our case by the fact the driver got lost, driving us to some rather interesting communist housing addition, when you arrive at the facility, don't expect any amenities, other than a small vending machine and a toilet. Despite the drawbacks, if you are a fan of aviation, the aircraft here are unrivaled, with great examples of TU 144 and TU 95. Overall making it well worth the money.

OK....the experience of the museum itself was a once in a lifetime pleasure, despite the cold and SNOW in October. are the things that are complete lies. 1 The tour absolutely did NOT have a translator or a former military pilot, as promised in the literature. It was led by a blonde woman from a tour company that knew nothing about the planes, drove us there, stood in the cold and drove us back. 2 The vehicle was her privately owned SUV, which was far far from As you travel in the comfort of your luxury minibus, your driver will talk to you about your destination of the day: Let me say, she was very polite and nice, and talked with us about where she had been and traveled. 3 We paid for the tour in February of 2015, so Viatour has had our money for 7 months. Upon calling the contact number in Moscow,- as required to finalize pickup location, etc- we were informed that the tour price had DOUBLED. I called Viatour and they told me that the issue had been resolved with the tour company in Moscow.... however we still ended up having to pay another 10,500 rubles 175 when we arrived. A complete ripoff. 4 Viatour sends you vouchers, or tickets to present for the tour. These are completely useless...nobody cares if you have a voucher or not...they just want more money. So...based on this real time experience...I don't know how to rate the tour overall. As I said, - the planes and history are wonderful for any aviation enthusiast, but the tour as a whole was a complete lie and ripoff. I will be sure to post this perspective on any blog that pertains to Viatour and the misinformation it presented. I am thoroughly disgusted with the complete lack of true organization and control of the tour that Viatour has,-and promises.
