Stop At: Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, Pater-Roth-Str. 2A, 85221, Dachau, Bavaria Germany

Meet your guide at Munich Central Station or your centrally located Munich hotel, then take a train to Dachau where a bus will then transport you to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.

During the Third Reich, Dachau was referred to as the ‘parent camp,’ serving as a training ground for the genocide to follow. A staggering range of persecuted people were sent to Dachau — including communists, German dissidents, gay men, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jewish people and Polish citizens — upward of 200,000 people were imprisoned here.

Today the camp stands as a memorial site with many of its original features serving as reminders of a time in history that should never be forgotten. Explore the site with your guide, and see the gatehouse with its Arbeit macht frei (Work makes you free) gateway, bunker and the crematorium. You can also visit the administration headquarters and see the rail platform where prisoners once arrived.

As you walk around, listen to your guide give the background on each site, learning about victims and perpetrators whose names were linked to the camp. Heinrich Himmler helped set up Dachau, and used it as a place to train the SS ("black shirts") guards.

If there is something you would like to know more about, simply let your guide know. After exploring the camp, take some free time to browse the museum if you like, and then return by train to Munich Central Station.

My husband and I toured Dachau this week. Our tour guide was Jeff. He was amazing and so very knowledgeable. He met us at the Munich train station and guided us to Dachau.

The site, as a memorial is so well done. I found it a fitting tribute to those who died there as well as those who suffered and survived. Is it hard to see the pictures and the video? Yes but...I think it is extremely important to tour it. With the rise of hate and hate groups around the world we must always remember what happened there and do all in our power to prevent it from ever happening again.

Please consider touring Dachau when you are in the area. We must never forget.

Our guide was Keith and he was amazing. So respectful, so informative and so helpful.

This tour is not one you can gush about - its sobering.

The tram and train ride was great - a good introduction for us. Keith took us all over the camp - explained everything very well and with so much respect.

Dachau is confronting - theres not much else you can say. Keith was fantastic and we cannot recommend him highly enough.

Jason did a very nice job for us. He handled the train and shuttle travel and then conducted the tour.

It was only the 4 of us and our guide. We learned so much. It is the only way I would do it. Our guide was so knowledgeable. I highly recommend it.

Brandon provided a great tour to Dachau. Originally the tour was supposed to be for 3 of us but one person has mobility issues and decided that the public transportation to Dachau was too difficult for her to navigate. Of the two of us who were left, one person had been to Dachau before about 25 years ago. Even though she had been there before and had taught history in school, she thought that the presentation from Brandon provided a lot of new information and was well worth taking the tour.

Enlightening. The place is sterilized and not that depressing but it seems not real. It should have been left in more of the original state. Think it can not happen again but it is going on all over now in a different form.
