This is a Hindi word the “DHOBHI” is the person who washes the clothes (washer man) and “GHAT” is the place where he washes the clothes using water. .
Home to a community of 64 dhobis, you will be astonished to see the traditional way of washing the clothes by the washer men in their respective confined areas called the Ghats. In the absence of a river, the ghat has to make do with the bore well water, cement tubs and huge tubs.
The clothes are first soaked in water and after applying detergent they use their hand to beat the clothes on the piece of stones and later they use the electric dryer to soak the water out. Each washer man operates on his own and buys his machines and chemicals by taking loans. You can always find them washing, scrubbing and later running to deliver their clothes on time.
