Pass By: Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, LA

After pickup in central New Orleans, it's a short drive across Lake Pontchartrain to Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana.

Stop At: Honey Island Swamp, Louisiana 70461, USA

Your guide welcomes you aboard a custom-made 22-passenger flat-bottom boat. The smaller sized, quiet boat can fit through narrow passages in the swamp foliage so that you see more and get closer to wildlife.

As your guide explains the history of Louisiana’s wetlands and swamp ecosystem, be on the lookout for alligators, raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles and other bird species. Get a close look at some wild gators as your guide shares facts about the toothy beasts, who can weigh up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg).

Glide safely through the fertile swamplands, learning about Cajun culture and how local people have utilized the swamp for food, homes, and medicine. You even see an authentic Cajun village that is only accessible by boat. Gain an understanding of why the wetlands are slowly disappearing and about the efforts being made to preserve Louisiana's natural treasures.

After a fascinating 2-hour boat tour, your guide returns you to shore.

Jacob was our Pilot and did a great job. Very personable and knowledgeable. He answered all of everyone's questions. We saw a lot of wildlife including wild pigs, alligators, raccoons, turtles...small ones and alligator snapping turtles. Ancient cypress trees. Loved the entire experience and it was a different experience than the Airboat tour we also took.

The bus journey to the boat and back was very comfortable and Dwayne, the driver was amazing, he was funny, professional and good driver. The boat trip was excellent Capt. Jonah was knowledgeable, and made the 2 hour trip really fun and interesting. We saw so much and learned a lot. I would highly recommend this activity for all ages. Very safe

Captain made our tour fun and educational. He appeared to be very well informed on every aspect of the swamps and marshes. His background as a fresh and salt water fisherman made him uniquely well qualified on the social history of the area and he was equally well-informed on the ecology of swamps and marshes.

Unbelievable tour done by Captain Aily. He has been in the Batou since he was a boy. Such a wealth of information concerning the fauna and flora of the swamp. We saw an alligator up close together with ring tailed raccoon families. We saw a bearded great blue heron as well. No snakes but it was early in the day. Snakes are reptiles and need to warm up before they can move around. He knows about the flowers: the water lilies, Spanish moss and its uses. He showed us the Louisiana Iris and the wild rice. He explained how he sets up lines to catch catfish. Goes hunting at night for bullfrogs. He never goes to the grocery store for meat. He lives on what he can catch or collect from the bayou. The swamp itself is very peaceful even though you know there are animals out there that can do you great harm.

Excellent tour with lots to see but really made enjoyable by guide Neil with great background stories and humor. The only difficulty was with the shuttle pickup where TripAdvisor’s instructions failed to highlight the shuttle pickup time (rather than the boat departure time) while the tour company gave the pickup location in the wrong part of the Bloch TripAdvisor had the right address0. Must look for the signage to be sure.
