Overview

Take a journey back in time to find the diverse narratives often hidden beneath the cobblestones.

Discover the stories of those who are often left out of the city landscape: Women, people of colour, and LQBTQIA individuals.

This guided journey around Oxford will go back in time to highlight the many ways women have historically experienced the urban space and family life, uncover how masculinities have shaped and been shaped by the university, and discuss queer experiences in the city.

Together we will analyse the urban landscape and material culture, discuss gendered geographies, and push back on social expectations.

This tour lasts for about 1.5hrs.

We will walk no more than two miles, but please be aware that cobble stones and uneven pavement may restrict the accessibility of this event.

Wonderfully crafted approach to showing and explaining the "other" side of Oxford's role in UK's modern history. Engaging format where guides ask opinions and ideas of participants. Thoughtful, provocative and engaging. One of the best tours I have ever taken.

I did the hidden histories, colonial, and original tours. All were exceptional. I learned a lot, loved how interactive it was, and found my guides really friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend these tours!!

Superb tour highlighting some amazing history of Oxford and encouraging dialogue in the group. It was a great experience and the tour guide we had was excellent at engaging with us and expanding the narrative on the history

These tours are among my favourite activities in Oxford! The focus is very much on the uncomfortable elements of the city's past and present rather than the main touristy bits. The tours are very interactive and the guides create a safe space for everyone to voice their thoughts. Some really interesting discussions pop up in this way and I got a better context of Oxford's quirks through this process. Hidden histories was a very good tour, it was refreshing to hear stories of people who have been pretty much overlooked by history, but have been instrumental in their own ways. Definitely recommend any of the Uncomfortable Oxford tours if you want to get to know the city from a different light!

A simple idea that allows you to see the beauty of the city centre while at the same time learning stories not in mainstream history. The discussion format of the tours is really good and makes for a more interesting time than a tour led by someone with a fixed agenda. Julie, the guide was knowledgeable and engaging. I would thoroughly recommend. I intend to go on one of the other tours now.
