Overview

The Douro Valley, World heritage and one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world, has unique landscapes and delicious treats ready to amaze you.

This region is home of the famous Douro Wine, specifically the Port wine.

As soon as we arrive we will sample the amazing treats that the valley has to offer: almonds, its traditional bread and its delicious honey, all paired with Douro´s red, white and rosé wines.

Then, we will head to the Pinhão train station, where you can see the history of Douro's wine industry in typical blue&white portuguese tiles. You can also go for an optional boat ride.

After, we will visit a family-owned winery with access to an exclusive lunch menu with all included and paired with White, Red and Port Wines. After lunch you will have a Port Wine tasting in which you will sample several different years.

Before arriving in Porto, we will visit Amarante, for a final tasting of its treats.

Tiago was an excellent guide! He was super informative and helpful telling us about the history of the region and the modern context. All of the tastings we had were wonderful and getting to stop to see the Douro was a treat.

We had a great day in the Douro Valley with Tiago as our guide. The stops are generous with wine and snacks, and lunch was a large, tasty portion with wine followed by port. You will definitely have your fill of local wine on this tour. The views are just as good as the wine, if not better, and we stopped at a viewpoint for photos as well.

AMAZING! Alex our tour guide was really knowledgeable and made the experience very effortless as everything was so organised. We loved learning about the green wine in the morning & olive oil at the top of the mountain. You’ve got to buy a bottle of wine to drink on the boat, and then the port tasting at the end was so so much fun! Would 100% recommend!

If you while away the long winter evenings watching celebrity chefs sampling wine and food in beautiful locations this is the tour with you. Our tour host, António, whisked us eastwards in a sturdy, comfortable Mercedes nine-seater to our first stop, the historic town of Amarante. Here we ate breakfast in an authentic workers' cafe where the owner served a platter of local sliced meats and cheeses accompanied by glasses of vinho verde - mercifully at the lower end of the alcohol spectrum given that it was not yet 9.30 am. A brief walk around the town followed including the church of St Gonçalo, patron saint of fertility. Cakes bearing his name are in shops all over the town and are beyond description. From here we travelled deep into the mountains to a hilltop vineyard where the owners had created a wine cellar with a shaded veranda offering distant views over their vines to a lake on the Douro river. We sampled some excellent wines including an impressive aromatic grande reserva red which we bought to savour back home. There was also a tour and explanation of the wine making process including the large stone troughs in which grapes are pressed under foot. Fortified and very cheerful by this stage we drove down to the lake where we embarked on a short river cruise allowing us to gaze enviously at the mountainside retreats of the wealthy. The journey to our last destination took us through more stunning countryside where the road wound around the steep escarpments and ravines bordering the Douro confidently and safely negotiated by our driver. At a boutique Port wine vineyard we were treated to lunch with a menu offering a choice of traditional Portuguese fare. I had Bacalhau à Brás (salt cod with shredded potatoes and egg) which is delicious and one of Portugal's signature dishes. Of course there was Port to sample and an interesting presentation from the owners of small-scale port production. The route of our tour had been designed to make our journey back to Porto as quick as possible down surprisingly clear and well maintained motorways. And we were dropped at the door of our hotel which was probably a good thing, given the day's wine intake! I hope you will be as pleased with this tour as we were.
