Overview

Portugal Active’s Horseback Riding Tour will take you through the breathtaking scenery of Viana do Castelo. You’ll pass through fields of flowers, mountain trails and even the paradisiac beaches* of the city.

The tour can be made for anyone – from a beginner to a professional – we have horses for all types of riders. It will be supervised by an experienced teacher who will guide and teach you how to better control your horse.

*During bathing season, there are legal restrictions on horseback riding and it isn't allowed to ride on the beach sand therefore our route will be adapted accordingly.

This was a great experience with beautiful views! I enjoyed riding on the beach as well as on the cobblestone roads - I thought the sound of the horses hooves on the cobblestones was great. I can't think of a better way to see the area. I felt like the price was very fair for the ride. No where in the states would you be allowed to ride any faster than a walk! The helmet and half chaps provided fit well and they allowed me to choose which type of saddle I wanted to ride in. My guide was good and even took some pictures for me - something you would have to pay extra for in the states! Coming for the US, this is a great riding experience all around.

An activity that has a lot of room for improvement. The experience was nice, people at the stable very friendly. I particularly enjoyed the ride on the beach and the short periods of galloping. However, the way this is managed is very poor. Firstly, no one from Portugal Active is present to make the introductions and ensure you’re getting what you’re paying for. Secondly, the price is high, at least for the type of experience I received: 1. I was assigned a guide who didn’t speak English and used Google Translate whenever he had to tell me something. 2. There was no briefing, I have no idea what the horse’s name was or what were the aids it responded best to. We just kind of went with the flow. 3. The rider safety equipment is super worn out. 4. The ride only lasted for 1:30 hr and not 2:30 as advertised. More than half of that time was spent on paved country roads, between fields and bushes. Probably the experience is better when in season and with a larger group; not what I experienced today unfortunately. All in all, I don’t regret going BUT would certainly look for alternatives if I wanted to come back.

We were able to join in on a group ride with another lovely couple. The horses had so much personality and were a pleasure to guide us along our trot along the trails and glimmering beach!

My girlfriend gifted me this activity, and it was truly wonderful. It was approximately 2 hours during which I completely forgot that the rest of the world existed. The way the guides treated us and the horses is incredible. Thank you to the entire team that made this possible.

I recently tried horseback riding and had a great time. The staff was friendly and helped me get comfortable with the horse. The ride through the scenic trail was relaxing and enjoyable. It was a unique way to connect with nature and experience the thrill of riding. I'd definitely recommend it for a fun outdoor activity.
