Overview

Halfway between Lazio and Tuscany we can find Orvieto, a little town of Umbria. While the part of the city on the surface has changed over time, the original subterranean structure has remained mostly intact. The guided tour of Orvieto Underground is therefore, the most suitable tool to get in touch with this very characteristic feature of the city, extremely wealthy in history and boasting very remarkable artistic “jewels”. Step by step, mysterious and fascinating echoes tell us about Etruscan age, while phantoms of the Middle ages and of the Renaissance era appear out of the damp shadows.
The beautiful Orvieto’s Cathedral facade is among the best in the world
As regard as decoration and its interior part, painted by Luca Signorelli. It was source of inspiration even for masters as Michelangelo. Michelangelo infact before starting to paint Sistine Chapel, went to Orvieto to admire how Luca Signorelli painted Heaven and Hell into the Cathedral. (entry fees cost: 7 Euros per person).

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Civita di Bagnoregio, 01022, Bagnoregio Italy

Civita di Bagnoregio was founded by Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago. The Civita (or City) was the birthplace of Saint Bonaventure, who died in 1274. The location of his boyhood house has long since fallen off the edge of the cliff. By the 16th century, Civita di Bagnoregio was beginning to decline, becoming eclipsed by its former suburb Bagnoregio.

At the end of the 17th century, the bishop and the municipal government were forced to move to Bagnoregio because of a major earthquake that accelerated the old town's decline. At that time, the area was part of the Papal States. In the 19th century, Civita di Bagnoregio's location was turning into an island and the pace of the erosion quickened as the layer of clay below the stone was reached in the area where today's bridge is situated. Bagnoregio continues as a small but prosperous town, while the older site became known in Italian as La città che muore ("The Dying Town"). Civita di Bagnoregio has only recently been experiencing a tourist revival.

We did 7 tours with AIM Limo. Hard pressed to choose the best one. Each was a unique opportunity to be immersed in Italian culture. The scenery, food, information on each area was unbelievable. Alessandro and Evano were wonderful to work with. They arrived early each day to get us and never made us feel rushed. They were very knowledgeable about each area we visited. We also used them for our airport transfers. I would highly recommend them for touring around Rome…the Vatican, Colosseum, etc….but you must schedule a day trip with them “off the beaten path”. Their prices are reasonable and the experience extraordinary!

The suggestion to go to unique destinations and venues, that tourists would never even know about was phenomenal. Thank you Allessandro and Ivano! I especially enjoyed Bangnoreggio; even many Italians have not heard of this medieval and once Etruscan village! I will recommend you to any who come to visit. Grazie Mille!! (Fr.) We spent the day touring with Alessandro, he escorted us on our tour and made some very good recommendations. Would not hesitate to use their tour service again. If you are concerned about the cost, it's worth it. It's way better than a tour bus, I have had that experience on prior vacations. Pick your tour, pay the cost and relax and enjoy Italy. RJD

This was our fourth visit to Rome, so we were ready for some new adventures. We had an incredible day; Livio was prompt and a pleasure. He had great insights, was personable and fun to get to know, and even taught us a few things about agriculture in the area. We had a wonderful day; I would highly recommend this trip, this company, and this driver.
