Our transport from Sorrento to Rome on July 10th, proved to be a disaster! I was traveling with my family of 9, we left Sorrento at 10:30am and did not arrive to our hotel until 4:30 pm! 6 hours of travel time! I did a lot of research on other options of travel from Sorrento to Rome, including taking the train from Naples, but wed need a transfer from our hotel to the train station and another transfer from the Rome train station to our hotel. The estimated travel time by car from Sorrento to Rome is 2.5 hours. I decided to book the private transfer, understanding wed be traveling in a van and needed to add time for this type of vehicle and traffic we may encounter.

The booking is through Travel Etc., which I contacted a few weeks before my travel to confirm my booking. I was told Rome implemented a new tax for any vehicle carrying more than 8 passengers. I was told to give the driver cash 100 to pay a tax at the checkpoint to get into Rome.

We were picked up 10:30am, around 1:00pm we were asked if we wanted to stop at a rest stop, we said yes. The driver asked if we wanted 30 minutes and we told him 15 minutes, we just wanted to use the rest room. We returned in 15 minutes only to wait another 10 minutes for the driver to return to the van to let us in.
We finally arrived in Rome at 2:30 pm, we pulled up first at what seemed to us to be a parking lot. The next stop was at a checkpoint but it was closed, we then drove outside of Rome in a completely different direction for about 30 minutes. My nephew looked up the checkpoints using his phone and saw the driver had passed the exit for a checkpoint. He asked the driver if he needed help and showed him the directions he had looked up. The driver wouldnt talk to him.
I called Travel Etc to inform them of the situation and was told theyd call the driver and call me back. I never received a call back. The driver finally exited the highway and pulled into a parking lot of a small plaza that had a bank. We saw the driver talking with a guard at the bank, then he walked across the lot to what looked like a newsstand and was talking to a gentlemen. I called Travel Etc. again to express my concern the driver didnt know where to go. I was told they couldnt get in touch with the driver but would try again. They put me on hold, contacted the driver and I was told not to worry the driver would get me to the hotel in the next 30 minutes.
We finally arrived at our hotel at 4:30, but the driver never stopped at a checkpoint to pay the tax. I called Travel Etc. the next day to let them know and requested a partial refund for the inconvenience my family went through. I was told theyd contact they transfer company and get back to me that afternoon. I never heard from them and called again the next day. I was then told to email them my complaint. The response I got was that travel time in that type of van usually takes 4 hours and due to the rest stop it further delayed our arrival. I was told the tax was paid online and they had to pay a fine of 140. I responded asking why a travel company such as theirs didnt inform me before my travel that it would take 4 hours and that being picked up at 10:30 am would cause us to not arrive in time to pay the tax at a checkpoint. I again requested a partial refund for the inconvenience and Travel Etc has never responded.

I question the due diligence Travel Etc. does of its vendors. If you need a transfer for a larger group, I wouldnt recommend this one. I booked other private transfers on this trip, not through Travel Etc, and had no issues.

The best way to travel between Rome and Sorrento. It is not cheap but it gains you two more days to tour on your trip. On your trip back from Sorrento to Rome, we had the afternoon and evening free for Rome. Had we used the train or bus, we would have used all our time getting back to Rome. Instead we had a relaxing 3-hour trrip to Rome and an afternoon and evening in Rome.

This pickup at Rome airport and transport direct to Sorrento saved us a day. The three hour ride from Rome to Sorrento was great. It was well worth the cost. In addition we had the afternoon to explore Sorrento.
