The Amphiteatrum Flavium, the original Latin name of the Colosseum, was built in 72 A.D. by the Emperor Vespasian, and could host over 50,000 spectators. It was used for public spectacles, animal hunts, executions, dramas and gladiators’battles. Brave gladiators fought against ferocious animals to delight the Emperor and the Roman citizens, but their only real aim was to regain their freedom!
