Stop At: Buried Village of Te Wairoa, 1180 Tarawera Road RD 5 Rotorua, Rotorua 3076 New Zealand

The Buried Village of Te Wairoa, just a 15-minute drive from Rotorua city, offers a firsthand look at one of New Zealand’s greatest natural disasters. Learn about the devastating effects when Mt. Tarawera erupted in 1886, which buried Te Wairoa and ended more than 150 lives. Now, well over a century later, the excavated village provides a unique opportunity to see how the area's Maori inhabitants and early settlers lived.

Guided group tours, audio/video tours, and talks, which are included with your admission ticket, are scheduled throughout the day. Learn about the geological and geothermal features of Lake Tarawera, Mt. Tarawera, and the surrounding lakes region. Find out what happened to the Pink and White Terraces, once a popular natural landmark. Discover how the village of Te Wairoa came to be, the role it played in developing the region, and how its legacy continues to influence New Zealand's tourism industry to this day.

Encounter the world-class Museum of Te Wairoa and its collection of excavated objects. Explore the archaeological site, which reveals the devastation of the eruption, and walk a paved path along the very sites that the people of Te Wairoa once called home. Take the Waterfall Trail to Wairere Falls, which plunges 98 feet (30 meters) to the valley below.

Head to Vi's Teahouse for delicious scones, Devonshire tea, and excellent coffee, or browse the range of gifts in the gift store. Children can search through the excavated sites for clues, or go to the Adventure Playground.

Allow 1–1.5 hours to experience the entire Buried Village.

An excellent experience combining poignant human stories, historical records an archaeological excavations from the tragic volcanic eruption of 1886 which destroyed local towns and villages and changed the landscape of the region forever. Also including a pleasant scenic walk and Waterfall. Informative, interesting and moving.

We did this tour on our own. It was beyond amazing. The ticket lady gave us a lovely introduction to the village. Walking around the village was quiet & eerie but beautiful. We chose to walk the waterfall (warning - this is not for the faint hearted or those who cannot walk lots of stairs) - was very much worth the walk.

A very interesting place, but sad that so many people died. It’s a bit like Pompei but on a smaller scale. Good self guided tour with lots of information with a good little trip round. I had my mobility scooter with me so didn’t do the waterfall

A great morning, really informative and interesting. Lots to learn about volcanoes and their devastation when they erupt. Hot chocolate at the end was a bonus ☕️.

Te Wairoa is a Maori village that was destroyed in the Tarawera eruption of 1886. The site is partially excavated and many artefacts are displayed in the museum section. I was fascinated with the accounts of the event from newspapers, photos, and especially the short video reenactment of that dreadful night. After this, we enjoyed exploring the village, especially the Maori whare/houses which sheltered many survivors from the mud that had rained down everywhere. There is also a short loop walk via steep stairs (hold the handrail) to view the very pretty water fall. This was worth it. The cafe was clean and pleasant. On average it takes about an hour, but I took closer to 2 hours as I wanted to read and look at everything in the museum.
