Overview

A day of excitement, culture, kai and connection…
For generations, Te Puia has welcomed manuhiri (visitors) from all over the world to explore the magic hidden within Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley.

Our 90 minute guided tour will bring you face to face with the biggest, naturally active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere Pōhutu Geyser, and enjoy the up-close experience with the New Zealand Kiwi, in our brand-new Kiwi Conservation Centre. Be mesmerized by exploding mud pools all throughout the valley and gaze at beautifully crafted Māori-made artwork and sculptures visible throughout Te Puia.

Watch carvers and weavers demonstrate their skills at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, and hear our guides share stories passed down from their ancestors. Our wānanga (school) is a lighthouse for indigenous culture, worldwide. We are honoured to open the doors to our wānanga and show you the work of internationally recognised artists.

It was an amazing place of geothermal activity. We were fortunate enough to see a geyser spout. It offers a Kiwi experience, but we did not see it. There is an interesting New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.

We had a chance to watch the largest geyser erupt. Spectacular! We also saw three kiwis in their enclosed habitat. Viewing the carving and weaving workshops was amazing. There's a lot to this place! Be sure to visit the gift shop.

You really get multiple great experiences in this ticket. First our guide took us to see the Maori weaving and carving centre which was very interesting. Then we went to the Kiwi house and saw 3 kiwi which is amazing just in itself! Finally we got to see the geyser which was very impressive as the tallest geyser in the southern hemisphere! Our tour guide was a Maori chief which meant that he was able to tell us loads about what we were seeing. It really was great to be able to ask him questions. The gift shop is also amazing.

Visited as part of an escorted tour group and the young Maori guy we got as a guide was excellent. He was on his last week as heading off to university but he was very engaged and keen to tell us all about the activities, the culture and the history and take any questions we had. The geyser was spectacular, it went off a couple of times while we were there. I'd certainly advise a poncho! The mud pools were steaming and bubbling away. It's like another world out here. The carving and weaving talks were very interesting and, again, the people we talked to couldn't have been more welcoming and informative. There is also good signage to give you details as you walk around. The Kiwi area was also excellent and we saw a couple of the birds out and about. You cannot take photos for fear of a flash going off but you can certainly observe brown kiwis for a good few minutes. Delightful. And, yes, they do have a gift shop. Which is good and large, has a very wide range of products and fair prices. A nice warm place for me to dry off - and spend some money! Highly recommend coming here for a half day.

Does not worth the price - the tour was short and the guide didn't talk much; didn't learn much about maori culture Took a look at the buffet and didn't purchase it, because it's just a regular buffet without much hangi experience
