We absolutely loved the awesome scenery and steaming volcanic lakes and vents - fascinating and very photogenic. If we were to return we'd probably just walk slowly to the lake and bus back. We loved the informative boat trip but found the time allowed to get to the lake too short and the lack of a clearly marked main track was incredibly frustrating (mainly at the far end of the walk where there were several equally likely options). Other walkers had similar confusion with regard to the correct path. We had to rush the last part of the walk and this detracted from the experience. Also, there was no operating toilet in the park beyond the main building. There is no excuse for not at least having a portaloo near the lake for those who find 2 hours too long. The cafe was very welcome for a coffee and light lunch.

This is a must do activity. This was my favorite activity while I was in this area. It is very cool and beautiful. The thermal lake is picturesque.

We only did up to the crater due to time constraints. It was worth it! Be careful when you book. TripAdvisor charges you in USD and does not display the currency other than $. Since we are local it was easy to make an assumption that the currency is displaying the local currency but it is not making it a LOT more expensive than booking with the facility directly.

It was very beautiful! If you’re a senior I recommend you purchase your ticket somewhere other than La Vacanza Travel. There was not the option when I booked but La Vacanza Travel did refund the $8 extra I had paid through them. Waimangu is the best value for money of all the Rotorua tourist spots.
