Overview

If you want to understand better the Balkans with all its complexity, rich history and colorful mixture of different cultures and habits, we recommend you to visit Nis with us.  During this day tour you will travel through history with the professional lead of your guide. Our journey through time will start from the Roman period, when Nis gave to the world one great man – The Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Then we will continue through the Middle Ages and the period of Ottoman rule which left constructions like the Nis Fortress and the Skull Tower – a symbol of the struggle for freedom and independence from the Ottomans. In the end we will pay attention to the Modern history and the period of Nazi occupation of former Yugoslavia, visiting the Nazi Concentration Camp. Of course after all the impressions that you get, it will be time for some rest. You will have the chance to taste the famous Serbian cuisine - one of the most delicious on the Balkans.

Really interesting trip, with a 2 hour 30 minute car journey each way. Nis itself is small and not so visually appealing or interesting as most European cities. However, our driver/guide (Martin) was very friendly and made the day most enjoyable. We also did the Skopje trip from Sofia. More impressive town and worth the four hour drive

We had pick up from our hotel so great. Our guide peter was very welcoming very helpful and full of intresting information . Skull tower and the concentration camp very emotionally scenes. If this sort of history intrests you then worth the vist. Our tour guide advised us on good restaurants to eat in . We had lovely food but wished we just grabbed a sandwich as we did not have enough time to go and explore nis which was a shame as i was really looking forward to that especially as nis looks a beautiful place .

The tour from start to finish was just spot on!! Guide arrived early but wasn't pressured to hurry up. The drive was long but Peter the guide was talking telling us interesting facts. The places we saw were all good and the tickets were included in the guide tour. We had an hour and an hour for lunch and to visit the castle but in Nis but was so busy by the time we eaten we had to leave. However Peter allowed us to stay another 40 minutes to quickly explore the castle. Peter was very knowledgeable and understood all our questions. Highly recommend!!

The trip to Serbia itself was fine (I do wish the tour guide who was driving us to/from Serbia talked to us in the van, as it was just complete silence in both directions) would have been nice to know more about Serbia etc. The issue we unfortunately had to experience however was due to other tourists (a family) on the trip with us who were from Armenia who failed to check their VISA requirements and we faced issues arriving at the border between Bulgaria/Serbia as their VISA had a 1 time entry/exit requirement to Bulgaria, at this point the tour operator (driver) 'should' have just said no they cannot go through to Serbia on the day trip ad arranged for a pick up for them at the border in return so that the rest of us on the trip did not have to then miss out. Instead the tour operator (driver) went for quite a while with our passports to try sort the issue and then miraculously came back to us stating that it was all fine and we can proceed through. However after a long day trip then to Serbia and coming back to the border that evening (then being stuck in traffic with long border ques), it was no longer 'fine' about the families VISA when we seen about 5/6 Bulgarian police officer's come out of no where to our van to move us aside for further questioning with the tour operator (driver) who appeared very frustrated, they also still had all our passports at this time. Then the tour operator (driver) informs us that we have to go back to Nis (Serbia) to go to the Armenian embassy to get the VISA that they need for re-entry to Bulgaria; the family in question were of course confused as the tour operator (driver) told them that morning that the issue was fine/sorted. After some time waiting around at the border, the tour operator (driver) gave those of us unaffected by the VISA issue (x 3) our passports back and said that 'someone' from his company would come pick the 3 of us up at a petrol station that we had to walk to down from the border and had a 'poor me' moment of what am I going to do now that he had to go back into Nis (Serbia) when his responsibility was to the tourists on this day trip and the proper process which should have been followed in this case at the 'start of the day'. The 3 of us had to then walk in the very cold weather (which of course then started to rain) down on the road (as there was no path, as I don't think a pedestrian is supposed to walk on the border roads) to find this service station to wait at. And we were at this service station for quite a while (over 2 hours) with no word from anyone, one of the girls with us text messaged someone in the tour operator who had contacted her the day previous about the pick-up time for the trip to see if she could contact someone, he eventually got back in contact with us to say he was on his way (though we did not believe he had even left Sofia at that time). He eventually arrived in his own car (no tour van) as we believed it was his day off, and brought us back to Sofia. Though we do have to mention for this whole tour agency they do have to learn to 'slow down' when it comes to driving as they are very fast, switch between lanes or drive between the lanes very quickly and brake quite suddenly (not great for someone who may be an anxious passenger) and you know have a fear of crashing; we also went on another day trip with this company 2 days later to Macedonia and experienced the same speeding issue (also taking note that the tour operator (driver) that day, had to pay about 6 speeding fines (from other drivers in the tour operator for that van) when entering the Macedonian border in order to go through and said he had no fines himself despite then speeding the whole time afterwards. We eventually got back to Sofia city centre 3.5 hours after we were supposed to have been back, feeling very cold and tired (as it was quite late that night) and we had to go try get some food. I also wanted to mention that the family from Armenia also had a small child travelling with them who was possibly 2/3 years old, he should not have been allowed on this trip it was far too long for a child, he was also sick (kept coughing/crying in the back of the van), he was causing interruptions during the tour parts in Serbia when the tour operator (driver) was explaining historical information to us that we could not hear very well; there should be a cap of possibly 12 years on who can attend these long day trips. I feel the whole process does need to be changes by the tour operator, they need to check at time of pick-up that each person has their passport/correct VISA requirements and if there is an issue at the border at the start of the trip, they need to be left behind (and picked up by someone from the tour operator) whilst the rest of the tourists on the trip get to carry on without being impacted also.
