Great, great tour! You get to see all the behind the scenes places that you never would in another tour. Some people complain that you can't take pictures in certain spots. Yes, that is true, but it is really only in the green room and stage sets that are not owned by the Opera House. Personally, I was more for the building and history and I was able to take pictures of all the things I wanted to in regards to those two things. Yvonne was amazing!

I am so glad I had the opportunity to take this guided back stage tour. Coming to Sydney and not touring the Opera House would have been a waster trip. Getting to go inside this iconic building was a real pleasure. I felt very lucky to get the information we received. Everyone should take this tour.

The views you get behind the scenes of the Joan Sutherland Theatre and the Concert Music Hall are great. You're in the orchestra pit and in the wings they can't get you any closer. Our guide, Kenny, was the BEST. This was one of the things we scheduled that we felt was entirely worth the time and the money.
It starts AWFULLY early in the morning when you're on vacation!!, but it's definitely worth it. The included breakfast we expected would be a roll and some coffee. You actually had several choices, including a full eggs, bacon, toast, juice, coffee. And you dine in the green room where the musicians and technicians meet and dine before, during, and after work.

Very interesting and up close. Just a tip, nothing to do with the tour....we wish we had seen a show at the Opera House...on the tour, our guide said tickets are usually available.

The Sydney Opera House in the morning.

The Sydney Opera House literally shimmers as the sun rises over the Sydney harbour. We arrived at the Sydney Opera House early in the morning for the VIP backstage tour.

Image

The Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House.

The Concert Hall was the first area we visited on the backstage tour, and it was inspiring to stand on a stage where so many famous performances have taken place.

Image

The Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is working all around the backstage tour, so while we were on the tour we got to see them getting ready for the performance of "Symphony at the Movies" (which we attended later that night) by bringing up a concert grand piano right up through the stage floor. The clearance was only about a quarter of an inch!

Image

Playing the piano at the Sydney Opera House

This was absolutely one of the best highlights of our trip to Sydney, Australia. I got to play the piano at the Sydney Opera House. Absolutely incredible.

Image

My wife and I at the Sydney Opera House

The VIP backstage tour visits the conductor's quarters, which is a beautiful room with a window that overlooks the Sydney harbour. But the best experience was actually playing the piano in that room at the Sydney Opera House. I felt like an instant celebrity and my wife joined me at the piano for this picture.

Image

The Opera Hall at the Sydney Opera House

We were not allowed to take any photos of the sets at the Sydney Opera House because the performances were still "in progress" and due to copyright laws and whatnot, our tour guide requested that nothing in the way of sets be photographed. So here is a photo of the Opera Hall at the Sydney Opera House. Behind me are incredible sets of the opera "Orlando".

Image

The right side of the Opera Hall at the Sydney Opera House

The right side of the Opera Hall at the Sydney Opera House. The hall was massive, and I know these pictures do not do it justice. The architecture inside was as beautiful as the architecture on the outside and everything was functional. Behind me was the rather small opera stage, but the set designers were amazing and the sets were incredible. They also used a large elevator to swap the giant operatic sets during the opera.

Choices, choices!

We had seen both the stage area for "The Narcissist" and for "Symphony at the Movies: Crimetime, with Clive James", but since we had actually stood on stage in the concert hall, we decided to see "Symphony at the Movies" that evening. It turned out to be a fantastic performance by the Sydney Symphony!!

The Orchestra Pit

We got to go into the orchestra pits.

The enormous organ

This organ is rarely played at the Sydney Opera House.
