Overview

We are proud to be bronze medal winners in the 2019 Tasmanian Tourism Awards.

The King River Gorge, Raft and Steam Experience is a collaborative adventure between King River Rafting and the West Coast Wilderness Railway, combining the thrill of white water rafting with a return steam train ride.

Raft through 7km of the King River Gorge's exciting rapids, from Newall Creek to Dubbil Barril, passing through a remote rainforest gorge. It's an awesome and exciting day rafting in the wilderness.

The return steam train ride takes us over a steep ridge using the rack and pinion Abt system to move the train out of the gorge and safely down the other side. Homeward bound the train stops at Rinadeena, a water stop for the train and coffee for us, and again at Lynchford. The last stop is Queenstown, where our tour ends.

Big shout out to Dino and crew for a wonderful experience. This was our first rafting trip and Dino definitely was a terrific guide and teacher. Pity the train wasn't operating. Keep up the good work. Sam and clan

We debated whether we'd be up for the challenge of the White Water rafting and if it would be too cold for us. After some debating and a very helpful phone call to the team, we thought let's give it a go...and we're so glad we did. We were positioned at the front of the raft and we got wet! However, active paddling and the wetsuits with booties kept us surprising comfortable. The team provided a fun but competent safety briefing at the start. Our guide Ollie was enthusiastic but also calm and reassuring throughout the experience, keeping us informed of what to expect prior to the different river sections. My partner and I joined a family with 2 kids. They had a great time too which added to the enjoyment of our experience. We had to climb over the portage where the river narrows and is squeezed rapidly through the rocks, making it too dangerous to raft through. It involved climbing over slippery rocks but the guides were there to help with foot placement but expect that you will get wet. From there it was a decent climb up the side of the river embankment and then down again the other side. It was muddy and also slippery and you were relying on wooden steps embedded into the side of the earth in places and holding on to ropes and the odd tree trunk in other places. The guides encouraged us to take our time during this phase as they ferried the empty boats through the river portage, to meet us on the other side. Climbing over the portage was highlighted in the tour description during the booking process. We found it added to the thrill of the day and probably stretched us out of our comfort-zone to an extent but hey - that's what we were there for. My suggestion would be that the portage climb height be mentioned for participant consideration in advance. A greats election of photos and videos were also emailed to us free of charge the following day. All up, the friendly team made for a thoroughly enjoying day and it was probably the highlight of our 2 week Tassie adventure

Our family of four had an absolute blast on this tour. One of our party was exceptionally hesitant to join the tour but Ollie our guide made them feel at ease and they completed the rafting and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The portage around the last falls was far wilder than we expected but part of the adventure. It started with a ‘swim’ in the King River and continued with climbing up and down a sometimes vertical wet rock ‘path’ After a cold and exciting rafting ride the trip back to Queenstown on the steam train was warm and welcome. Would do again but in the heat of summer just cause of that swim. Thanks Ollie for your calm guidance that enabled our family to enjoy such a magnificent experience in such a beautiful part of the world.

A must in Tassie Just awesome! First time at 69 doung white water rafting Dean0 and Ben0 were funny, fun, safe and gave clear instructions. My nerves abated very quickly. Our ride down the high level King river was exciting, where we paddled soft, hard, rested, ended up laughing as we did a flip, had a dip, agitated, ot sprayed and soaked with water. I wished we could do it all over again. The gear they supplied was perfect. the steam train back was an extraordinary touch and well worth a trip as it is unique and takes us through some beautiful forest and ferns and a view of the river wed just come down. Thank you so much. A highlight to my 17 day holiday in tassie. I'll share with many and recommend it for all who love to venture and have fun.
