About the Red Church at Cap Malheureux

One of the most renowned churches in Mauritius is the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel, a Roman Catholic Church famous for its vivid red roof against the bright turquoise sea and azure sky.

Located ten minutes from Grand Bay is the small fishing village of Cap Malheureux. It translates to “Unfortunate/Unhappy Cape”, due to the numerous ships, which floundered there in the past.

The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church is famous for its lovely red roof, which attracts many curious passers-by and offers a picturesque background for worthy snapshots. This simple chapel was founded in 1938 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is situated ideally at the very northern point of Mauritius, offering breathtaking views of the five northern islets, including Coin de Mire (Gunner’s Quoin).

This Roman Catholic Church draws in a lot of visitors as well as worshippers. On Sunday mornings, many tourists can be found joining the mass. The church, as well as the beach behind the church is a popular spot for newlyweds to have their pictures taken- so it is not uncommon to run into couples here. The beach behind allows you to soak up the sun and enjoy the view, while the kids can play in the white sand and discover aquatic life in the rock pools. Fishermen are also frequently docking, with a fresh catch.

This was a fun tour with the highlights of the north: the Caudan waterfront, the Sikh temple, the red roof Catholic church, the fortress and the botanical garden. The tour was very interesting, but I understand that the southwest is even more so. Unfortunately that tour was blown away by the cyclone and there was no more time to explore. Our guide, Barbur, was very knowledgeable about the history of the island. We would have been happy to go with him again on the other tour that the weather made impossible.

We did the tour of the North of Mauritius with Pradeep. He told us a lot about the people, the area and the history of the places we drove past. It was raining in the morning so he changed the schedule to accommodate the weather and do the outdoor activities later. At the market in Port Louis Pradeep gave us good advice as to how to bargain with vendors and consequently saved us a lot of money. He was very attentive to us and waited patiently while we were in the gardens and in the Aventure l'sucre. He even took us to a Tamil temple which was not on the schedule for the day. Pradeep was amicable and knowledgeable. We had a lovely day.

Our North Day Trip From Sugar Beach Hotel (Flic en Flac) - The Fort 0900-1000 From The Fort - Port Louis Mall/Harbour 1015-1030 Free From Harbour - Sugar Museum 1145-1215 575 rupees (Approx £10) each From Sugar Museum - Lunch (L’Ocean) 1355-1400 1250 rupees (Approx £25) 1 main course, little of wine and 2 bottles of water each From Lunch - Botanical Gardens 1500-1600 200 rupees (Approx £4) then paid 75 rupees for at our guide (Approx £2), it was worth it - although it got sold as a private tour and we ended up getting merged with a German group of 4 From Botanical - Norte-Dame Auxilitrice de Cap Malheureix (Catholic Church) 1600-1630 Free From Church - Back to Sugar Beach Hotel 1800 Have written the above times / pride - as it maybe helpful to future passengers, we were by no means rushed, and the day was around our times, and we could have had less or longer in each place if needed/we wanted. We did somehow manage to miss the market at the port, but there was plenty to do and view the new malls/had a drink around the harbour etc (you do need to negotiate if buying items - something I don’t like doing, but it was necessary)! Lunch was in a clean, modern environment - based around fresh seafood with rice, chips and salad. There are meat options should you not like that. The car we had was a Toyota Salon, clean and nicely cooled - a very hot and humid day, so that was great after walking around in the heat. Handy to get yourself set up to be able to WhatsApp the driver, to allow flexibility/communication during the day - we did this. We traveled as myself (29), my wife 23, my Mother (51) and Grandmother in law (79), good for all ages - perhaps not so much for little ones (may get bored) or those who struggle walking distances (Approx 4.6 miles - if the iwatch is too be believed). Easy to book, and Ridwaan will contact you as soon as you book via WhatsApp, and is available throughout. Very happy with the service, and our experience of the North of Mauritius.
