About the Red Church at Cap Malheureux

One of the most renowned churches in Mauritius is the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel, a Roman Catholic Church famous for its vivid red roof against the bright turquoise sea and azure sky.

Located ten minutes from Grand Bay is the small fishing village of Cap Malheureux. It translates to “Unfortunate/Unhappy Cape”, due to the numerous ships, which floundered there in the past.

The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church is famous for its lovely red roof, which attracts many curious passers-by and offers a picturesque background for worthy snapshots. This simple chapel was founded in 1938 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is situated ideally at the very northern point of Mauritius, offering breathtaking views of the five northern islets, including Coin de Mire (Gunner’s Quoin).

This Roman Catholic Church draws in a lot of visitors as well as worshippers. On Sunday mornings, many tourists can be found joining the mass. The church, as well as the beach behind the church is a popular spot for newlyweds to have their pictures taken- so it is not uncommon to run into couples here. The beach behind allows you to soak up the sun and enjoy the view, while the kids can play in the white sand and discover aquatic life in the rock pools. Fishermen are also frequently docking, with a fresh catch.

It was our last day in Mauritius and we were looking for a day long activity to pass the time until our flight later that evening. As we had already engaged in other various tours throughout our time in Mauritius I looked into a tour of the North. I messaged The Palm Taxi service who were prompt to respond with their availability. The next day Ridwaan arrived at our hotel at the agreed time and we set off for our day trip. We visited the botanical garden, sugar museum (which included some rum tasting!), Citadelle and Port Louis. What made the tour wasn't just the activities and sights it was Ridwaan himself. A very well spoken interesting and knowledgeable man. It was an absolute pleasure to be in his company. Nothing was too much and I could not recommend him company enough. We learned more about the country in this one tour than we had in the two weeks spent in Mauritius.

We had a private north tour with Ridwaan who was an excellent guide: friendly, reliable and informative. He was very flexible and happy to listen to our requests. Unfortunately we had to miss out on a beach swim but that was because of rain and couldn’t be helped! We visited the Botanical Gardens (which we found disappointing - rather neglected) and Port Louis, Adelaide Fort, Château de Labourdonnais and the very pretty red roofed church at Cap Malheureux. We also stopped at a very local restaurant that served generous and delicious food at very low prices! We liked the fact that Ridwaan suggested this rather than the more typical, expensive tourist spots. Ridwaan speaks excellent English and is a good source of advice for those of us visiting Mauritius for the first time. Nothing was too much trouble and we would definitely recommend his services.
