Overview

With this 3-Days Eastern Turkey tour, you will have a chance to see the imposing stone heads atop a remote, 2,150-metre-high mountain are one of Turkey’s most iconic sites. The statues of Greek and Persian gods, which were up to 33ft tall, formed part of the tomb and temple complex built by Antiochus I (69-34 BC), who reigned over the Commagene kingdom. You will be also able to see the urban life of South-Eastern Turkey away from modern life.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cappadocia - Kahramanmaras - Adiyaman - Mt. Nemrut - Adiyaman

Pass By: Karatay Han, 50 km east of Kayseri, Kayseri Turkiye
Along the way, you will pass by the Seljuk Karatay Caravansaray.

Pass through Adiyaman and visit Arsemia, once the capital of the Commagene Kingdom.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Cendere Bridge, Kahta Burmapınar, Adiyaman Turkiye
To the left of the modern bridge over the Cendere River, you’ll see a magnificent humpback Roman bridge built in the 2nd century AD. The surviving Latin stelae state that the bridge was built in honor of Emperor Septimius Severus. Of the four original Corinthian columns (two at either end), three are still standing.

Stop At: Karakus Tumulusu, Kahta Turkiye
Karakuş Tümülüs was built in 36 BC. A handful of columns ring the mound – there were more, but the limestone blocks were used by the Romans to build the Cendere Bridge. An eagle tops a column at the car park, a lion tops another around the mound, and a third has an inscribed slab explaining that the burial mound holds female relatives of King Mithridates II.

Stop At: Mount Nemrut, Adiyaman 50100 Turkiye
In 62 BC, King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene built on the mountain top a tomb-sanctuary flanked by huge statues (8–9 m or 26–30 ft high) of himself, two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian, and Iranian gods, such as Hercules-Vahagn, Zeus-Aramazd or Oromasdes (associated with the Iranian god Ahura Mazda), Tyche, and Apollo-Mithras. These statues were once seated, with names of each god inscribed on them. The heads of the statues have at some stage been removed from their bodies, and they are now scattered throughout the site.

Day 2: Gobekli Tepe - Harran - Sanliurfa

Stop At: Potbelly Hill, Orencik, Sanliurfa 63290 Turkiye
Gobekli Tepe, a hilltop sanctuary that is erected on the highest point of a mountain ridge 15 km northeast of the town of Urfa. What makes Gobeklitepe different in its class is the date it was constructed, which is around twelve thousand years ago, in 10,000 BC.

Stop At: Harran, Harran, Sanliurfa Province
Visit nearby Harran and see the incredible beehive houses. Harran which the Bible states were the place where prophet Abraham spent some years with his family before moving to Israel, the Promised Land. There are some exceptional photo opportunities in this area.

Stop At: Sanliurfa, Sanliurfa, Sanliurfa Province
Drive back to Sanliurfa where we will stay and you will have a chance to see Mevlid-i Halil Mosque, where you can see the Prophet Abraham Cave and the Pools of the Holy Carp surrounding it, then wander around the oriental covered bazaar.

Day 3: Gaziantep - Cappadocia

Stop At: Zeugma Mosaic Museum, Mithatpasa Mahallesi Haci Sani Konukoglu Bulvari Sehitkamil, Gaziantep 27500 Turkiye
After breakfast and check-out drive from Sanliurfa to Gaziantep where you can see the famous Mosaic Museum, the largest in the world and home to the famous 'Gypsy Girl' mosaic. This museum exhibits superb mosaics discovered at the roman site of Belkis - Zeugma before Birecik Dam flooded most of the site. After lunch, we drive across the Taurus Mountains and back to Goreme, Cappadocia.
