Improvement of this historically commercial and shipping part of the city began only in the 20th century. The central embankment acquired for us the image of a city park after the October Revolution. Then she received the name of Stepan Razin. During the Great Patriotic War, bloody battles took place on the embankment. The warriors of the 62nd army stood to death, not giving the fascists a chance to approach the Volga, because from here they were evacuating civilians and supplying the city with ammunition and food. After the war, the embankment of Volgograd was named after the 62nd Army. In 1952, the destroyed embankment was rebuilt anew in the style of Soviet classicism according to the design of architects Simbirtsev, Fialko and Makarenko. The snow-white cuts on both sides of the stairs symbolize the river gates to the city on the Volga. The majestic staircase of 100 steps rises from the very edge of the water.

The square received its name in 1920, when units of the Red Army liberated the city of Tsaritsyn from the White Guards. The remains of 55 victims of white terror were buried on Alexander Square, which from that day became known as the Square of Fallen Fighters. In 1942–1943, the defenders of Stalingrad, who fell in battle, were buried near the grave of the heroes of the civil war. Monument-obelisk, made of black and red granite, opened in 1957. The eternal flame was lit on February 1, 1963. The inscription on a polished slab of black granite near the Eternal Flame says: “Soldiers and officers of the 62nd and 64th armies, heroic defenders of the city, who died the death of the brave in the days of the great battle of Stalingrad 1942–1943, are buried here. It was rebuild after the battle and a memorial, made from bricks from the original building, was attached to the eastern outer wall of the complex. The text on this memorial reads: "In this house, military and workers heroic deeds were united."
