The city of Gumusler in Cappadocia’s Nigde province holds one of the largest and best-preserved rock structures in all of Turkey. Eski Gumusler Monastery may not be as popular as the other attractions in Cappadocia, but it has some of the most beautiful frescoes anywhere in the region.
These Byzantine frescoes were painted between the 7th and 11th centuries and feature different images including Christ enthroned with two angels, Basil the Great of Kayseri and Gregory of Nazians.
But its most popular painting is that of the Virgin and Child that depicts Mary with a smile like Mona Lisa. This image is said to be the only smiling Mary in existence.
The rest of the Eski Gumusler Monastery is also worth exploring. The complex has several rock-cut dwellings, a kitchen, a large courtyard and a reservoir for wine and oil. There are also two levels of subterranean rooms that can be accessed through a nine-meter deep shaft.
Since the monastery is located 10 kilometers northeast of Nigde, it’s best to book a tour with La Vacanza where everything is already arranged for you—from transportation to the tour itself—so you can focus on having fun and not worry about anything at all.
