Underground Cities
Turkey is one of the few places in the world that has both aboveground and underground tourist attractions. In Cappadocia, in particular, you will not only see fairy chimneys and rock-cut churches, but also a complex network of underground cities.
Derinkuyu is one of the most famous in Cappadocia, but it is just one of about 35 underground cities that have been discovered and more that are yet to be uncovered.
Recently a 5000-year-old, long-lost underground city has been discovered in the central Nevsehir province. This is worth adding to your itinerary when possible.
What makes these cities a must-visit is the brilliant construction that provides a glimpse of the level of engineering ingenuity early citizens had. Some underground cities have a ventilation system even at a depth of 80m.
It is believed that these cities were designed to protect the people from invading forces. But a few of them suggest that they are home to a thriving and economically stable community.
There have been several conspiracy theories about them too. All the more reason to book a tour to these massive networks of tunnels and traps.
