Located 72 kilometers north of Chiang Mai, the caves of Chiang Dao is one of the top attractions of the Chiang Dao National Park. There are currently more than 100 caves in the 12-kilometer complex inside the Chiang Dao mountain range but only five of them are open to the public.
From the entrance, you will descend into a cavern filled with different images of Buddha and a bit further is the guide station. From here, you can choose to explore the two lit caves by yourself or go to the three caves where you can either rent a gas lantern and explore it by yourself or hire one of the local guides to show you around.
Tham Seua Dao and Tham Phra Nawn are the two caves lit with electric lights where you’ll see more images of Buddha, different statues and shrines. The three dark caves—Tham Maa, Tham Naam, and Tham Kaew—are best explored with a guide who can lead you to the highlights of these caves.
Exploring the Chiang Dao Caves is definitely an adventure because aside from the long walks, you’ll also need to crawl through small openings or traverse difficult and small walkways to visit the different caves.
