Dubai Museum

Dubai Museum

Officially known as the National Museum of Dubai, the Dubai Museum is the main museum in Dubai, which is particularly located in the Al Fahidi Fort and established in the oldest existing building in the city. It was opened in 1971 by the ruler of Dubai with the purpose of showing the traditional way of life in the region, including local artifacts and antiquities from Asian and African that conducted trade with the city in the past. It also displays several dioramas that show life in the city before oil came into the scene, as well as items that date as far back as 3000 BC.

Since 2007, the museum has been welcoming thousands of visitors daily, making it one of the top tourist attractions in Dubai, with the most popular visiting times being from August to April.

What to Experience in the Dubai Museum

By the time you enter the museum, you will see how the fort was constructed and other displays that go along with it. From here, you can take the path to the galleries that display the general culture of the region, especially in the 1800s.

Its exhibit charts the city’s rapid evolution from being a pearling and fishing village to being a global centre of finance, commerce and tourism. Your tour here would also include a walk through a mock souk with dioramas depicting craftsmen and shopkeepers at work; an exhibit on the Bedouin life in the desert; and a room that exhibits archaeological findings from excavation sites—tombs at Jumeirah, Al Qusais, etc.—that are believed to attest to ancient settlements that dates back around 4,000 years ago.

The main exhibit in the Dubai Museum begins at the end of a spiral ramp with a video that features historical highlights from the 1930s to the 2000s. There are some scenes that show life at home, at school, at sea and in the desert, including a particular section that depicts the difficult life of pearl divers.

Things That You Should Not Miss

The museum’s most intriguing sections are the galleries that offer a comprehensive introduction to the traditional lifestyle of the emirate through a series of life-sizes dioramas that elucidate ancient mosques, Arab houses, souks, date farms and desert life. There is also an interesting multimedia display based on well-researched presentation in the basement area is. Basically, this presentation chronicles several important phases that show the city’s transformation from a small modest town to what we see Dubai today, which is a highly sophisticated international city.

Visiting the Dubai Museum

While Dubai is known for having a plethora of attractions for travelers from all walks of life, a trip to the Dubai Museum would leave you spellbound, as it will allow you to learn how the city developed to what it is today—an internationally recognized tourism and trade destination.
