Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong

Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong

Your visit to Hong Kong won’t be complete if you won’t drop by Lan Kwai Fong at least once. This might seem like an outlandish and exaggerated statement, but the fact is that Lan Kwai Fong has become one of the most popular attractions in the territory and attracts both locals and tourists almost every single day. The area will instantly become your favorite if you love dancing, drinking, and meeting new people but, even if you’re a not really a party person, it’s still a must-visit since it’s a great place for watching people and getting a delicious meal.

Where Is It Located?

Lan Kwai Fong (nicknamed LFK) is historically a small L-shaped lane in Hong Kong’s Central business district. The lane used to host prostitutes in the late 1800s, although it became a spot for street traders in the 1900s. Everything changed three decades ago when businessman Allan Zeman built the California Bar and later the California Entertainment Building and the California Tower. These developments attracted investors and business owners, who proceeded to build restaurants, bars, and even art galleries in the area. Today, Lan Kwai Fong has outgrown its small cobble-stoned lane and has expanded into D'Aguilar Street and even into Wyndham Street, Wing Wah Lane, and other nearby areas.

What to Expect

If you’re claustrophobic, you’ll want to avoid Lan Kwai Fong. The area is usually  crowded especially in the evening, with hundreds of people compressed into the narrow, sloping streets. This isn’t really surprising since many locals head off to Lan Kwai Fong to enjoy a round of drinks after work, while tourists hang out in the area to soak in the distinct LFK atmosphere and make new friends.

When you get to Lan Kwai Fong, make sure to take a picture of yourself with the LFK official street sign. This sign has become so famous that there are more photos of it than the celebrities who come to party! Once you take the obligatory selfie, wander around to choose a restaurant dine in. Different dining establishments specialize in different cuisines so, whether you’re craving for Japanese sushi, Spanish tapas, or a warm plate of Pad Thai, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for.

After filling your tummy with a tasty meal, it’s time lose yourself in the crowd and wander around. Join a game of snooker to show off your skills and learn new techniques from other players, or visit a club and dance the night away as international DJs blast the latest hits. If you’re in the mood for some mellow music, look for street performers who’ll entertain the crowd with great acoustic tunes.

If you’re in Hong Kong for Halloween, New Year’s Eve, and other occasions,  expect to see a bigger crowd in Lan Kwai Fong. The area attracts more people during holidays since it hosts exciting carnivals and other fun celebrations. LFK also hosts various events throughout the year, including the Lan Kwai Fong Music and Beer Fest.
