Top Religious Places in Kerala

In your itinerary, you should go to the following places:

  • Sabarimala, Pathanamthitta - This is a holy Hindu site that is famous for its diety Lord Dharmasastha (commonly called Ayyappan), who is believed to be the son of Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The place is also known as the destination for the Mandalam Pilgrimage, which is considered as the second largest pilgrimage in the world, with nearly 300 million devotees from all corners of the globe coming here. Its temple is situated on top of a hill known as Sannidhanam, which is surrounded by seven major hill ranges and seven minor hill ranges.
  • Guruvayoor - This place is the location of the Sree Krishna Temple, which is considered as one of the most important pilgrimage centers in India. The temple is believed to be constructed by the Guru of Gods (Deva Guru) and the God of Winds (Lord Vayu Deva) by order of Lord Krishna during the time of his death. A visit to this sacred temple would not be complete without visiting the Elephant Fort (Punathur Kotta), where you can observe the luxurious lifestyle of elephants in a large courtyard that is made exclusively for them.
  • Mannarasala Temple - Located in Haripad, this is said to be the most famous snake temple in the state and is the capital of the Snake God (Naga Raja), his consorts the Snake Ghostess (Naga Yakshi) and the Snake Queen (Naga Rani), along with his large battalion of snake army. Snake worship is very unique and important to the Keralan culture, as it is believed that the state came from the Naga Empire. In fact, this wonderful temple is built within a natural forest where snakes live.
  • Thirunavaya Banks - Basically, this is a large river bank area along River Nila that holds stories of one of the biggest Hindu festival of South India, which became extinct when Malabar was annexed by the British in the 18th century. Because of the tradition of war on this river bank, it has become a major place for post-death rituals among Hindus for immersing ashes after cremation.
  • Thazhathangady Juma Masjid - Located in Kottayam, this more than a century old mosque is one of the oldest of its kind in India and is famous for its richness of architecture and beauty that looks similar to Keralan architecture.
