Batu Caves, Malaysia
No visit to Malaysia will be complete without a stop at Batu Caves, one of the country’s most famous tourist attractions. Located in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia, this limestone hill features a series of caves and a 100-year old temple where idols and statues are displayed inside the three main caves.
Batu Caves is an important Tamil shrine outside India and a focal point for Thaipusam, a Hindu festival in Malaysia. At the entrance of the cave is the 42.7- meter statue of Murugan, the tallest of its kind in the world. The statue costs around 24 million rupees to make and used up over 300 liters of gold paint brought from Thailand.
A 272-step stair climb will take you to Cathedral Cave, the biggest of the three major caves, which features intricately decorated Hindu shrines and a 100-meter high arched ceiling.
At the foot of the hill are Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave that also features several Hindu artwork and statues. During the Hindu festival of Thaipusam held at the end of January, Batu Caves is filled with thousands of devotees and tourists from around the world.
