Lugano (Lake Lugano and Ticino)

Lugano (Lake Lugano and Ticino)

The ninth-largest city in Switzerland, Lugano is located on Lake Lugano in the canton of Ticino, which borders Italy. It has also has the largest-Italian speaking community outside of Italy and it’s most famous for its stunning scenery and for being the home of Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse.

The lakeside city of Lugano is dubbed as the “Monte Carlo of Switzerland” for its laidback vibe and A-list visitors from around the world.

The city’s top attraction would have to be Lago di Lugano, the 50 square kilometers glacial lake on the border of Switzerland and Italy. Its Mediterranean-like climate is perfect for different water activities like boating or you can just sit back and enjoy the stunning views of this picturesque Swiss city.

Some of Lugano’s most notable spots include the 63,000 square meter parkland of Parco Civico-Ciani, the San Lorenzo Cathedral, the Swissminiatur and of course, the Hermann Hesse Museum. And true to its chocolate heritage, Lugano is also the home of the Alprose Chocolate Museum that offers a detailed history of chocolate making in Lugano and yes, free samples.
