Overview

Ama’s Surf School Weligama Sri Lanka was originally founded to help all those surfers who felt they had plateaued or were struggling to progress. The enthusiast who loves being in the ocean but can’t work out how to take their surfing to the next level. While for some riding broken waves in the white water suits them, for most this is just the start of a longer surfing journey fuelled by the dream of gliding along the open face of waves trimming and turning in harmony with the ocean.

What Can You Expect?

Itinerary

For total beginners, soft surf boards are used at first, then later moving onto fibreglass boards.

Whether you take a lesson or enroll on one of our Surf courses, you will learn all the core skills needed to begin safe, successful surfing:

Surf safety
Jump up techniques
Footwork and stance
Core balance techniques
Turning the board
Paddling out and efficient paddling
Paddling technique
Catching and riding unbroken waves

Also, all our beginner surfing courses contain excellent background information that will really expand your surfing knowledge.

    I had an amazing experience with Ama surf school, particularly with my very patient instructor, Akila. I was concerned that learning to surf for the first time in my 30s might be difficult but I was already riding waves into shore within 30 minutes of my lesson. Would highly recommend for anyone considering giving it a go!

    We were in Weligama for a week and took 5 surf lessons. After a short time we could already stand on the board and after only 3 lessons we were able to join in with the advanced surfers and switch from the softboard to the hardboard. It was great fun and the one-to-one supervision was really great so that we learnt quickly. Many thanks for the incredibly great experience

    We took multiple lessons at Ama surf school and our instructor made sure that the lessons matched our needs perfectly! This made it really fun and helped us to improve a lot in one week!

    These guys truly deserve their title as the greatest in Weligama! I can’t believe how much they’ve taught me in such a short space of time! I thought I’d be lucky if I stood up once during my first lesson, but they had me riding waves from the very beginning ( and it’s such a rush!). I feel especially fortunate to have met my coach Dinu. He’s extremely professional and always paying attention. What’s more, he knows exactly how to push me to achieve my personal best and as soon as I do something wrong, he lets me know what I need to do to fix it and it works! I also feel super safe out there with him as he’s always looking out for me and positioning my board so that I’m not hit by big waves or other surfers. Finally, they’re all such a welcoming and friendly bunch that I’m really going to miss them and this lifestyle when I leave! Cheers for the most amazing few weeks everyone :)

    Absolutely friendly and welcoming people , had an incident where I stepped on a sea urchin down in matara ,the boys were extremely attentive and gave me proper advice on how I should immediately go to a hospital .. looked after my sister and my girl until I got back , highly recommended! Ps; thought my friend to surf in under 30 mints
