Goreme Open-Air Museum, Goreme
When you think about museums, you'd usually imagine a building that houses a collection of artifacts from history and other sources. The Göreme Open-Air Museum is the complete opposite, as the name suggests.
This is mainly because the collections here are not items unearthed from geological sites. The site itself is the collection.
It is a vast monastic complex of buildings carved into rocks—churches with beautiful frescoes, eleven refectories, a nunnery, and other rock-cut wonders.
In this museum, you will find:
- St. Barbara Church
- Apple (Elmali) Church
- Snake (Yilanli) Church
- Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise)
- Carikli (Sandals) Church
- Buckle (Tokali) Church
These are just some of the more notable on-site churches.
The Göreme Open-Air Museum has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1984. It is also one of the first two Turkish UNESCO sites.
The best time to visit the museum is during summer, preferably early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Avoid going there during mid-day because the heat of the sun will make your excursion hot and sweaty.
No Cappadocian itinerary is complete without a visit to the Göreme Open-Air Museum. You haven't been to this part of Turkey unless you visit it.
