Itinerary

Stop At: Giraffe Centre, Duma Rd, Nairobi Kenya

The tour start by picking you from your Nairobi Hotel. Proceed to the Giraffe Center, the headquarter for the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife made famous by "Daisy Rothschild", a giraffe calf rescued from Soi, on the Western Kenya border. Daisy and her family form only a small part of a herd of these gentle giants, living in a semi wild state at Giraffe Manor. You will also learn their behaviours, traits and more conservation education. These animals will come to a protecting wall to be fed.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Mbagathi Gate, Off Magadi Road Kws Workshop Entrance - Nairobi National Park, Nairobi 00503 Kenya

We will drive you to David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have a walk through the little center from 11am - 12pm in an open space, with a rope fence around it. The youngest elephants come trotting out of the bush to greet their keepers who stand at the ready with giant bottles of milk. For the next 10-15 minutes you can watch each little one slurp and gargle their milk. When they're done, there's water to play with and keepers to nudge and get hugs from. While you get to watch them play and take photos. You find out how old they were when they arrived at the orphanage, where they were rescued from, and what got them into trouble. The most common reasons for getting orphaned being: mother's poached, falling into wells, and human/wildlife conflict. Once the youngest are all fed, they are led back into the bush, and it's the turn of the 2-3 year olds. Some of them can feed themselves, and some are still fed by their keepers. It's very cute to watch them hold their giant milk bottles in their trunks and close their eyes with joy as they make quick work of several gallons of milk.

We had a great tour guide who took good care of us and of course seeing the elephants and giraffes was amazing.

The Giraffe center was great. Learned a lot about the species and conservation efforts. Seeing the babies at Sheldrick was enjoyable. They were so adorable taking their bottles and then playing and eating leaves. Also went to a bead 'factory'. I was not really interested in this piece of the tour but found it to be so educational and one of the best experiences I had during my trip.

Due to the Sept 19 additional fee imposed by Kenya Wildlife Service for admission into the National Park where the elephant orphanage is, there was a fair amount of angst about the fee and how to pay it. I believe that fee has now been incorporated into the cost of the tour so it should no longer be an issue. This was probably as stressful for Gracepatt tours trying to figure out the best way to manage this new fee as it was for me, however, it was very stressful and is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Once the day came, it was stellar. Our guide, Stephen, was prompt, friendly, and very helpful. We were grateful that he was driving through the jungle that is Nairobi traffic instead of us! The trip from our hotel was a nice tour of the city. At both the Giraffe Center and the Elephant Orphanage, Stephen expertly led us to the best viewing spots, gave us background info and snapped some amazing photos for us. The bead factory tour was led by one of their employees and was a worthwhile stop, not to mention the gorgeous & colorful products available for purchase. We had lunch at a lovely outdoor restaurant set within lots of plants, flowers and birds. This part of the tour gets 5 stars. Thank you for a wonderful time!

We booked our tour on 25th July for a trip due to take place 10th September. Very disappointingly we received a cancellation email at 8pm the night before they were due to collect us from our hotel stating there were no tickets available for the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, so we would be unable to visit, offering us a trip to the Karen Blixen museum and a bead factory instead. We enquired if there would be any compensation and were offered KSh 800 each, which we decided wasn’t an acceptable amount so decided to cancel our trip in its entirety. We visited the Giraffe Centre under our own steam instead for significantly less cost. Don’t waste your time booking this trip with this company. The only positive thing to add is that we did get our refund with no issue.

My feedback does not refer to either the giraffe centre or elephant orphanage...but the tour operator. They sell the tour but don't have confirmed tickets, and cancell at short notice or offer an alternative tour the evening before. If you want to go to the elephant orphanage do yourself a favour and go to the Sheldrick organisation website and read their update on tickets. I had good experience with Graceprat on a multi-day safari... but not with this one.
