Overview

Our First stop is Assin Manso Slave Ancestral River where the Slaves had their last bath before moving them to Cape Coast and Elmina castles for final shipment. At Assin Manso, you will be told the history and walk through the Ancestral path to see the slave river where tourists will have opportunity to pray to their Ancestors and ask them for forgiveness.

From the slave river, we move to Cape Coast Castle for the main history about the slave trade during colonial rule and see the DOOR OF NO RETURN

After the castle, we get to enjoy the hike to Kakum National Park as we go onto Canopy Walk in the park. Get ready for an exciting but physically demanding (15-20 minute) hike in a dense Rain Forest. We will climb a hill so wear sporty shoes, sneakers and face towel for the forest hike.

NB: You can skip Kakum National Park/Canopy Walk for Elmina Castle. Or go to Elmina Castle instead of Cape Coast Castle but not both. Feel free to decide!

Enjoy your trip!

Stop At: Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park, Assin Manso Ghana

we visit the Assin Manso slave river site which served as the place where slaves had their last bath on African soil before being marched down to the slave castles. They were fed and cleaned so they appeared attractive and healthy to guarantee higher prices. hot branding irons were used to burn identifying marks onto the skin of captives. The marks were a scar on the shoulder, breast or upper arm to show ownership. Other times, branding was used to show that proper duty had been paid. it is now a sacred place of remembrance. it is home for the first 2 diasporas (Lady Crystal from Jamaica and Samuel Carson from New York) whose remains were brought to Ghana through the “door of return” and Reburied. Also remains of African slave descendants from Barbados are buried on the site to symbolize emancipation and re-connection.

I am forever grateful to you Sir. Thank you for your love for your people both home and aboard. Thank you for standing with me as my internal emotions began to pour out of me in pure joy. This is a must do tour that will take you through a wide range of emotions. I highly recommend it on your first visit to Ghana! Freedom was our tour guide, and he was very knowledgeable, thorough and professional. I love that the tour incorporated the Ancestral Slave River Park while other similar tours that I found only incorporated Kakum National Park. And we were given the option to skip the National Park, so if you want to focus on the history and the people’s experience, you can do so by only going to the Slave River Park and one or both Castles.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this highly recommended tour to Cape Coast Castle, Assin Manso River, and the Kakum National Park/Canopy Walk! The tour is an all inclusive experience into the extremely important history and pathways of the transatlantic slave trade of which many African Americans can trace their lineage to. No trip to Ghana would be complete unless you embark on this very relevant tour! Foster was an amazing guide whom ensured the experience was fulfilling and unforgettable!
