The Weta Unleashed Workshop was a really great experience that I'd recommend to anyone interested in VFX, Props, or animation. It doesn't have much in the way of Lord of the Rings stuff, though there are little bits here and there, BUT it was an enjoyable experience in its own right! You'll get a tour guide who will take you through the place. We had Kiki (spelling?), who was fun and energetic and really made the experience a blast. She was able to tell us a lot about how the sets were made and the techniques that went into it. You'll go through three different movie sets (they were made specifically for this tour I believe), all in different genres. And there's some really interesting things to see! There's props that you can touch and interact with. Also a lot you can't. And there's a little creativity workshop at the end which children will find a lot of fun. Overall, if you're into art and movie magic, you'll really enjoy this. If you're not, then there's not a lot there for you. Thank you for a great time, Kiki and Weta Unleashed!

The cost of admission includes a guide for the whole hour and a half. We were lucky to have Autumn - she was so fun and enthusiastic and added so much to our incredible experience. You are encouraged to take photos and touch nearly everything you see so great for kids. This site is geared for movie special effects (Wellington is for Hobbit enthusiasts) and I can't rave how much fun we had. I wasn't that taken with the guts section where you walk through the internals of a huge beast, but it only takes a minute to go through and you can easily avoid that experience if it's not your thing.

I would highly recommend this, what a fantastical and informative visit. I love how they take you on a journey and the areas are interactive. Thank you Cici for being an enthusactic and great tour guide. I'll be back when I next visit N.Z.

5 adult members of my family did the Unleashed tour this morning and we were all amazed! I am a massive Tolkien fan and seeing how all the movie magic comes to life had me frothing. We were a bit late to the tour because we got a bit lost on the way in being from Australia. But it was no priblem! We were let into the ‘store room’ easily with no issues. I think we just missed one photo opportunity which we were fine with. It was surprisingly immersive being allowed to touch and play with most things. I actually found that my curiosity for everything meant that I didn’t get to explore everything that I wanted to before having to move on to the next space. Highlight of the horror section was the ‘Screamery’ and I was very glad that nothing tried to jump scare us! My favourite part was definitely the fantasy section! The small world builds and different aspects of conceptualising, designing and creating costumes, props and new fantastical worlds was awe-inspiring! I was almost brought to tears, overwhelmed by the artistry and brilliance of the creators at Weka. The tour ending with a giant alien robot demonstration was icing on a pretty spectacular cake. Kiki, (NOT Sarah), was an animated and engaging tour guide whose enthusiasm and story telling added to the experience. I feel she really helped to give us ‘adults’ permission to be playful and tap into our imaginations. It was definitely a highlight of our trip to NZ and a must do for creatives!

This is so so good and superior to the Wellington Weta Workshop experience. Whilst the Wellington one has movie items you may be keen to see for nostalga (eg LoTR, Hobbit, various sci-fi films) they're basically all in one room and you can't take photos. The Auckland Unleashed experience doesn't have the same movie props but lets you take photos in almost every single room of special movie concept designs instead - and they're really really good! The space is much much bigger and you can try your hand at a lot more fun things (like sketching, working with clay) and a ton more interaction with models. The tour guide script is much more engaging too. Plus I could actually HEAR my tour guide perfectly without disturbance by noise from other tour groups - something which is a big problem with in the smaller Wellington version. The shop space is also larger, but I think the Wellington "Weta Cave" has more Tolkein books to buy (something I was interested in) plus some other stuff. And the Wellington version also has the mini "museum" but its barely 5 mins of your time. The Wellington version needs to be larger, sound-proofed, and show more film props to compete! The only problem I had with the Auckland experience was finding the thing from the Sky Tower. Overall I definitely recommend this everyone!
