We left from Ubud, which happened to be where our tour guide, Dewa, is also based, so he knew the area well. The route took us pretty much directly North, to Lovina, and Dewa stopped off at some amazing places along the way. After dinner in Lovina, we slept in the van until the ferry crossing from Gilimanuk, and then a steep drive up a winding road towards Ijen. At Ijen, we found a very cool little base camp, where we sat around a campfire swapping stories and listening to music, and trying Javanese coffee and fried banana, and also purchased some goods from the markets (at very cheap prices compared to Bali) Once Ijen opens at 1am, a local guide, Po, accompanied us up the mountain. A lot of people were finding the climb difficult, but we are experienced hikers and did not find it challenging, having to stop frequently for our guide to catch his breath! The second half of the climb, after the compulsory stop at the mid way cafeteria, becomes a lot steeper, and the smell of sulphur began to affect me, our guide provided us with Gas masks which eliminated the issue, though it does make drawing a breath a bit harder, especially if winded from the climb. Once we hit the crater, we descended towards the blue flame, this part is not, I repeat, IS NOT for people that are not physically fit. It is about 1000 ft, almost vertical descent, down a slippery, rocky path, in the middle of the night, with only torch light to guide your way, while sulphur clouds are stinging your eyes. You must also give way to the miners, who do this daily with up to 90kg on their backs, try to buy their little sulphur carvings if you can, they only cost about 15000rp and it supplements their hard earned income, they only have a life expectancy of 45, not having enough money for gas masks. When you reach the bottom, you are met with the eery blue flamed volcano, 1 of only 2 in the world according to our guide. It is strange, and wonderful, and everyone who sees it goes quiet and is just enchanted for a brief time. You will then have to climb to the crater again, avoiding other groups coming down the narrow tracks, and then wait a couple of hours for the sun to rise so you can see the blue lake. There is only a window of about 4 hours to see the blue flames as the miners will use a pump to enable them to work, and this extinguishes the flames, so you get down there early, but this means you do have to sit around a little before the sun rises - bring snacks and warm clothes, I stayed quite warm throughout the climbing due to physical exertion, but the sitting around definitely made me very chilly. The sun rise is amazing as it lights up the scenery around you, and you look around not realising how beautiful the landscape was that you passed that morning in complete darkness. After tipping Po, we met up with Dewa once more and he dropped us to our next destination in Bali. Overall, this was probably one of my favourite things I have ever done in many trips to Indonesia, and I would recommend to anyone who asks me.

The tour guide/driver was really nice and has good driving skills. He also took us to some beautiful sights along the way to make our trip worthwhile. Ijen Volcano is truly a magical place. The trek was hard but it was worth it in the end. I recommend booking this tour for adventurous individuals who wants a bit of a challenge.

Going to Mt. Ijen took a lot of traveling time but our tour guide (Dewa) let us visit a couple of tourist spots on the way which made traveling fun. We also had an enjoyable dinner at Warung Makan Neriki from a lovely couple from France. Most importantly, Dewa is an excellent driver that kept us safe. We slept comfortably in the car knowing that we can trust Dewa to bring us to our destination safely. This is an awesome tour and once in a lifetime experience to see a billion stars, a blue fire earth wonder, and a majestic lake.

This trip was incredible from start to finish. Dewa was a wonderful guide, with great English! He ensured that we experienced both the beautiful Indonesian country, without overlooking the local people that make this country so special. Dewa brought a very personal experience to our time in Bali, allowing us to connect with real locals and experience a slice of the real day to day life of the Balinese people. Don't miss out on this one!
