Overview

The first time that Easy Company part of the 101st. Airborne division reached the hills of Obersalzberg most of the buildings in that area where destroyed. If you visit this area today you will see that a lot has changed, the forest has taken over and a big parking place leads people straight up the mountain. This tour is here to provide you with far reaching insight of the historical locations hidden in the forest, see the ruins of Hitler's house and other WWII sights that will bring history to life. Then hike up from there to the Eagle's Nest and you will following the steps of the first American soldiers that got there by foot in May 1945. Even though the Eagle's Nest is one of the most visited places in Germany our tour will take us thru a more richer and less traveled path. The tour is a mix world history, exercise and incredible landscapes.

The Eagle's Nest is located in the imposing summit of the Kehlstein mountain. Even to this date not such place has being build. People taking the tour will discover all the history behind its construction, win insight about the role it plays today in society and have the opportunity to explore the incredible landscapes of the Bavarian Alps.

Stop At: Parkplatz Obersalzberg - Dokumentationszentrum, 83471 Berchtesgaden, Germany

This part of the tour is unique because the location is so rich historically, only if you know where to look. We will hike around the area of Obersalzberg, the place where Hitler and many other high ranking officers had their houses. The tour will give an insight of the historical importance of that area, how it was transformed into a nazi town and what decisions where taken there that affected the life of millions.

An amazing alternative and active way to travel up to the eagles nest! Highly recommend if you enjoy getting off the beaten path and enjoy a walk.

This tour was amazing. The tour guide was a walking history book which made the hike more memorable. We took the secret hiking route away from others which means we had a lot of ground to ourselves. It was a bit difficult to hike due to the elevation but that is what we were looking for. I believe you can choose which route you want to take. I would 100% recommend and would do it again. 3000 ft elevator!

This was an amazing tour hiking to the top of Eagle's Nest with our guide, Claudio. Before the hike, Claudio took us to a few different spots in the area and talked to us about the history and what happened there - really interesting insights. We then did the hike up which took us around 2 hours. Eagle's Nest itself is fascinating and the views at the top were stunning. We took the bus back and enjoyed the views on the way down. Thank you Claudio for a brilliant day.

Claudio was wonderful. From the confirming phone call we made the day before, until the end of our tour he was perfect. His English is very high level to include USA English jargon and idiosyncrasies. He is a great teller of history, a political science major, and provides a great balance of potentially politically charged topics. He is able to read the clientele, from physical ability standpoint, and a cultural standpoint. If you want the best, schedule your Salzburg to the Eagles Nest Tour with him. If I could give him 6 stars I would. Cheers Claudio. The hike is very challenging due to a 20% grade increase. Most mountain hikes in the US are 5-8 % with more switchbacks. The footing is perfect packed pea gravel, so that part is fine. We had a great day.

The hike was challenging, very beautiful and eye opening. Claudio, the guide, was very patient and encouraging. He is an expert on the area and history there in. We are so glad we accepted and completed this challenge!
