Overview

As the founder of 'CapeTownOutside' I provide both day and multi-day private, guided trips to show you the intriguing pre-historic rock art of the San people - the first inhabitants of Southern Africa. These cave paintings are prolific in the Cederberg mountain conservancy about 3 hours from Cape Town. The Cederberg is also part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site for it exceptional plant biodiversity. The multi-day trips can be customised to suit your preferences. On the day trip we will walk an easy wilderness trail to view a series of remarkable rock art sites - many thousands of years old. This is one of the best open-air art galleries of late stone-age San rock art accessible from Cape Town. You will see the art in situ and learn about it and the people who painted it. This is a uniquely Southern African experience. It is an art, archaeology, cultural history, and African wilderness experience rolled into one. For inquiries search 'CapeTownOutside'.

I went on the two day trip, which included an overnight camping in the Cederberg Mountains. The rock art was extensive and beautiful, and the terrain, rock formations, caves and overhangs were equally stunning. Callan was great, and fun to travel with. He's an expert guide, generous in sharing his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge about the rock art, the geology, flora, and history of the area. Everything was provided, and Callan had thought of every detail, from providing walking sticks to bringing fruit for the drive, TP for the camp, and spices and napkins for our tasty roasted chicken and baked vegetables dinner (he was also a great cook), and flashlights for the tents which were equipped with very comfortable air mattresses. It was great having the two days. Highly recommend the whole experience.

Callan was the gracious host with a great array of unique knowledge about the San rock paintings that are not far from Cape Town. Humble and deprecatory, he was open to the many possible scenarios responsible for the leftover art we see on these rock walls today.

I woudl thoroughly recommend the day trip to the Cederberg to see rock art - it really is a day well spent. The drive is long but the scenery and mountain passes we travelled through are awesome. Once you get to the bushmen cave art, Callan is a knowledgeable, professional and interesting guide. The rock art is fascinating and I found the experience really interesting and worthwhile.

Like everyone else here I also had a wonderful trip to the San Rock painting with Callan. He is a really nice guy and good company. He is very enthusiastic and he has a great knowledge about the paintings. I've been to Cape Town several times and this is definitely one of my best experiences :-) I look forward to going to another experience with him next time in Cape Town.
