Lyttelton is one of the oldest townships in New Zealand and the starting point of Shackton's famous Antarctic expeditions. It boasts the largest and busiest port on the South Island, while the township maintains a quaint local vibe. On Saturdays, the main street hosts a vibrant local market.
Depending on your boat's arrival and departure time, You may have some more time at the start or end of the day to find a souvenir, visit a local cafe, or find a quiet spot to enjoy the view of the Harbour.

Stop At: Governors Bay, Governors Bay, Canterbury Region, South Island
Governors Bay is a small settlement situated at the far end of Lyttelton Harbour. It has approximately 5,000 residents, a small local school, and one pub. It's a nice example of coastal living in New Zealand.
We stop for a short walk and Photo opportunity at the iconic Governors Bay Jetty.
A 15 minute drive around the coast brings us to the next location.

Stop At: Gebbies Pass, Canterbury 7672, New Zealand
Gebbies Pass links Lyttelton Harbour to Banks Peninsula and Akaroa Harbour. Stopping at the top of the 161-meter-high pass affords a stunning view over the rugged farmland and with Lyttelton Harbor in the background.
A 15-minute drive brings us to our next location.

Stop At: Kaituna Valley Scenic Reserve, Kaituna Valley Road, Ataahua 7672, New Zealand
Morning tea is served before exploring the beautiful native bush and admiring the massive Mati (New Zealand White Pine) Trees. An easy 10-minute loop track is an option for those who would like to stretch their legs.
A 15-minute drive brings us to our next location.

Stop At: Little River, Little River, Canterbury Region, South Island
A tiny township nestled between steep hillside farmland and native bush. The food, art, and ice cream that are sold here are favourites with Christchurch locals visiting Akaroa.
A 20-minute over a steep hill brings us into Akaroa Harbour and into Barrys Bay.
You will have some free time here to admire the local artworks, sample the ice cream or check out the historic railway station.

An optional stop at this iconic local cheesemonger (open weekdays only).
From Barrys Bay, it takes 15 minutes to drive around the end of the harbour to the township of Akaroka.

It's time to explore Akaroa township at your own pace. There is lots to see and do, from small shops, increadable scenic walks and plenty of options for lunch (lunch is not included)..

On the way back to Lyttelton, we will drive through the suburbs of Christchurch. If time allows we will also drive through the centre of Christchurch city. Depending on the departure time of your cruise ship, you may have some time in Christchurch City before heading back to the port.
