Overview

Book a safari, and meet your personal driver-guide at Hambantota Port. Head inside (own expense), board your private 4x4, and explore the dirt trails around the reserve, Sri Lanka’a biggest wildlife sanctuary.

As you explore, learn about the reserve’s geography and species from your guide, and scan the forests, grasslands, lakes, and brush. Keep your camera ready for sightings of leopards, usually spotted near the lakes, and sloth bears; and watch for elephants, deer, jackals, wild pig, and water buffalo.

Look, too, for wetland birds like Storks, spoonbills, and egrets, including migratory species (November-March), and perhaps spot reptiles like mugger crocodiles, monitor lizards, snakes, and the rare Indian star tortoise. Other species include pond and soft-shelled turtles, and varieties of butterfly like the Blue Mormon and Crimson Rose.

End of the adventure we'll drop you back to Hambantota port.

We traveled around the park finding many animals in their natural environs with the high light being a glimpse of a leopard. Would have enjoyed it more if the "guide" had given a bit of a description of what we were seeing.

Our Guide could show us all Animals what we wanted to see. He spoke very good English and explained a lot. We got much more to see than we expected. We saw Elephants and much more.

Our driver/guide made this experience great. He was a very safe driver, we felt super comfortable, and he was very knowledgeable about the animals. He often stopped to point out things we had not seen - which was a lot! Overall, really happy, thought the safari was great value and would highly recommend to others.

It was amazing to see wild elephants, even a mother and baby. I saw several other animals too. At the end of the tour apparently there was a leopard on a rock.

A lot of hanging around, particularly at the bus to 4WD exchange point. The park needs to invest in better track maintenance with the US $45 per person entry fee, as the roads were the worst we have encountered on any safari across the Globe, meaning the main Leopard activity area was inaccessible and the journey was uncomfortable. We saw a decent amount of wildlife including a herd of Elephants, Monitor Lizards, Monkeys, Waterbufallo, Crocodiles and various exotic birds.
