I visited Tamba for two days. I was really surprised to find that more than 50 kilns have been handed down for more than 850 years, maintaining the individual sense, creativity and style of Pottery Making. The pottery-making experience was a difficult one, but I managed it as the potter was very kind and patiently taught me how to make pottery. When I received the Tamba-yaki bowls and teacups etc. arrived home a few weeks later, I was so pleased those works as they are so lovely including color and texture. They just remind me of days in Tamba. Furthermore, the Satobito (local guide) was so good. They showed us around places related to Tamba pottery, and I was so impressed with the history and background of the area and people, as well as the enthusiasm of the potters for their work and Tamba. Next time, I would like to stay longer at the pottery-stay and experience more things and meet many people in Tamba which would promote my understanding of the lifestyle of Tamba.
I was impressed with the history and people who deeply respect the history and Tambayaki. I talked with several craftsmen. They all were so nice and kind. I had never actually seen a potterying scene in my eyes. One craftsman gave us a trial cup for free. I just fall in love with these atmospheres which human beings has been creating. And Sakurai chef’s galette wan amazing ! Worth to visiting the restaurant (but reservations are needed)
