Stop At: Malaysia, Malaysia
The Klias Wetland and Forest Reserve is an excellent example of how flora and fauna live in harmony and where endangered species are protected from possible extinction. Located outside of Kota Kinabalu, the region is teeming with wildlife, ranging from monkeys, birds to thousands and thousands of fireflies. Once the day turns into the evening, these little critters shine the brightest, illuminating almost a path through the mangrove forests of Klias. An example of exploring Malaysia, purely themed on the amazing beauty of Sabah with its wonderful collection of wild animals and dense jungle has been created that seamlessly shows visitors what can be seen aboard a river cruise. When an afternoon (and an evening) to spare, don’t hesitate and simple continue exploring the wonders of Borneo.
The afternoon starts at around 14:00 hrs with meeting the team behind making this a memorable afternoon and evening. As you slowly drive away from Kota Kinabalu, the landscape moves from concrete structures to scenic coastal roads and local villages, a signal that our playing grounds for the coming hours is arriving slowly. At approximately 16:00 hrs, you will arrive at the boat jetty, right at the river banks of the Klias River. A cruise would not be complete without some refreshments and given the time between exploring the wetlands and dinner, the serving of tea, coffee and local snacks will bridge the time up until dinner is served. Aside from birds, lizards and even crocodiles, the Klias Forest Reserve is home to the indigenous Proboscis Monkey. With their large pendulous, protruding nose, and giant bellies the proboscis monkey has one of the most unusual appearances of all primates. Unfortunately, this species is on the threat of being extinct due to ongoing habitat loss and ongoing logging practices for agricultural purposes. Other monkey species may be spotted, too, and seeing them playing in their natural habitat is seen as a big honour. As the sun sets, we head back to the main pier for a traditional Malaysian buffet dinner. Cruising the waters sees its final installation as soon as darkness has set in and swarms of fireflies enter the stage for a delightful demonstration of flickering through the mangrove forests with your short boat trip ending at around 19:30 hrs.
This excellent tour out and about ends in comfort back at your hotel in Kota Kinabalu at around 21:00 hrs as your guide / driver reach the lobby of your hotel.
