Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it's kinda cheesy. But, nevertheless, I do recommend this activity for a first-time visit to Japan. The organization was excellent and very professional. They know how to move their guests through quickly. We were first dressed in kimonos (both men and women) and that may be the best part of the activity. Plenty of time to take photos. The tea ceremony itself felt a bit short. Although our very gentle and polite hostess spoke English, it was still a bit challenging to understand her accent. She explained the key elements of the ceremony and a small bit about the philosophy behind it (I wish there was more.) We were then each given the opportunity to whisk our own matcha tea before partaking of a small sweet (and you absolutely need to do that first) and then drinking the tea. There are two venues this company offers the tea ceremony. We participated at the venue near Nishiki market. When booking, be careful about taking note which of the two venues you've booked or else you might find yourselves in the wrong place.

This experience is very professional. The staff know exactly what they are doing and they work so hard to ensure that the experience is first class. A team of wonderful women assisted us into our traditional kimonos and styled our hair. We had time for photos in the private garden before the actual tea ceremony. We had a tea master to show us what to do, she was so lovely and gentle. She made the whole process look like an elaborate dance almost. Our guide spoke excellent English and explained everything thoroughly. After the tea ceremony we had more time for photos in the traditional ryokan house and the zen garden. Finally we were assisted back into our own clothes.

Disappointed with experience. I read all the great reviews and thought this would be amazing. Pros: location is great, beautiful photos Cons: We booked for a tea ceremony and it said group size is around 6. This was not accurate, we had 12 people attend our session. This is not the end of the world, but it’s double the size they said. We arrived 10 minutes early, and everything was rushed. It was an assembly line of chaos getting my hair and kimono. Not at all the experience I expected. Super fast, no time to pick out anything, just they just kept moving you every 30 seconds. I was literally fully dressed in kimono and hair done in 10 minutes, not the 30 they estimate it will take. This was an expensive experience and I paid more expecting it to be a better experience than assembly line. Tea ceremony itself was fine, but not great. Overall, if you want the experience this is probably better than the super cheap versions that have 25+ people. But be aware it’s still rushed, probably more people than advertised and not truly relaxing.

It was an amazing experience. The hosts were very nice and thought us a lot about the tea ceremony. The ceremony itself was a unique experience. They also let us walking with the kimonos around Kyoto for around 2 hours.

A completely unforgetful overbooking with +50 persons in a small space meaning we, among others, were in the wrong spot to catch a glimpse of the ceremony. We also started with a, to be nice, quite confusing tour of the premises with probably 10 out of +50 could hear what the Lady said. This tour needs to be reorganised cause right now its close to a ripoff.
