Overview

Though the capital of Provence and France’s 2nd-largest city, Marseille proudly grooves to its own Mediterranean beat – a mash-up of big-city grit and small-town sociability mixed with seagull squawks and scooter engines. Bookended by limestone fjords and garrigue hills, this working-class metropolis is profoundly shaped by its seaside location and its deep ties to the rest of the Mediterranean. The port has welcomed waves of goods, immigrants, and ideas since 600 B.C. Briny, boisterous, gritty and gorgeous, Marseille is a cultural crossroads in constant flux. The latest evolution was sparked in 2013, when the city reigned as Europe’s Capital of Culture. Now, France’s least-known city is finally on the map. Let us be your guide with this food tour in Marseille.

Dont miss this tour! Our guide, wonderful Séverine lead us around Marseilles streets and introduced us to the cuisine, culture and the history of Marseille taking us on a journey through local haunts from Georgian/Moroccan specialty shops and lively produce markets where she pointed out loads of interesting, seasonal produce and steet foods such as Panisse, a chickpea fry, which we gobbled up. With a friendly easygoing manner, Séverine provided lots of tasty goodies along the way and explained the history of the different inhabitants of Marseille over time and how it influenced everyday life and food. The variety of places we saw and the authentic local eateries we visited was great, from seeing croissants being produced by hand by a delightful artisan to tucking into said croissants with coffees at a local café, the experience was delicious. The group got to know each street by street and drink by drink, artisan lemon and thyme beer and truffle cashews in one place then onto a rustic restaurant for home made lemonade or mint tea with copious amounts of traditional dishes originating from the Magreb. Chocolate, made by hand was a great way to end the tour. Thanks Séverine for pointing out so many things along the way!

I had never been to Marseille before so this tour provided an interesting view of Marseille's diverse history and culture. I enjoyed learning about and sampling the food of some of the cultures that make up Marseille, including Tunisian, Armenian, Algerian, Corsican, and other stops along the way, finishing with Provencal pastis. Our guide Corrine (Coco) was very knowledgeable and personable. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed the tour. Our tour guide, Corrine, was super knowledgeable. She taught us a lot about Marseille, the history of the city, food culture and all about the neighborhoods. I had been to Marseille several times and walked by many of the places we went, but I had never thought to go inside or wouldn't have thought that they held such treasures. We ate a ton of food!!

What a delightful way to explore Marseilles! We had our wonderful guide Coco to ourselves, which was an unexpected bonus. She is so knowledgeable and warm--a great teacher! She gave us a tour that included so many delicious tastes, but she also taught us a lot about her beautiful city. It was a lot of walking and a lot of food, but since it was stretched over several hours it was easy and accessible. Highly recommended!
