Overview

Amboseli is set on the Kenyan plains with Mt Kilimanjaro as a backdrop in the distance, the park is world-famous for its substantial population of African Elephants which can be seen in herds of over 100 individuals. In particular the large bull elephants have some of the largest tusks in the animal kingdom. Also to be spotted are ample herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and impala, as well as giraffes and warthog. With all this variety you can be sure a healthy population of predators also call Amboseli home. Lions, leopards, caracals, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas and serval cats are all frequently seen in the park.

This day trip was amazing. Jerry with Perfect Safari was the best driver and super knowledgeable guide. The van was comfortable with the poptop. Definitely have a poptop either 4WD Safari or Van. We saw every animal we expected, ate a glorious lunch at Ol Tukai lodge. I wish we could have stayed the night. The road from Nairobi to the park is not for the faint of heart - you need a driver like Jerry to ensure you make it! The only downside was the Massai Souvenir sellers at the gate. Literally pushing items in my face insisting on money. I would have bought something if they had stayed out of my personal space.

What an epic and perfect day. Jerry was the best you could ask for. Part expert NASCAR driver. Part tour guide so knowledgeable about Amboseli and part comedian making the day fun. Dozens of elephants, hundreds of zebras, gazelles, beautiful birds and at the very end HIPPOS!!! Lunch at Ol Tukai lodge was the best we’ve had on our trip. I wish we’d thought about staying the night. Driving the road from Nairobi to Mombasa is not for the faint of heart so you better have an expert driver like Jerry. Bring some snacks, the best camera you can, and your energy. Fantastic day!

Black Santa was amazing and showed me the park and knew exactly where to go to see the elephant herds as well as all of the other animals in the park. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

I took a day trip to Amboseli. It was one of the best days I spent while in Kenya. Samuel the tour guide was very knowledgeable of the park and animals. He also navigated the Kenyan roads and traffic with ease. I would definitely go again.

Amboseli is probably the most beautiful national park in Africa. Where else can you go where Mt. Kilimanjaro serves as a constant background to your tour? It was a little like being in a Monet painting. On our visit to Kenya, we went to 4 national parks but Amboseli gives you the most majestic views of elephants and elephant herds but unlike other National parks, the setting really takes the center-stage here. Vast tracts of savanna and dried lake beds along with marshlands, make Amboseli the most varied national park in Kenya. After spending several hours at the park, we headed for lunch at the Ol Tukai lodge. Now before we go forward, I want to say that we spent our visit in Kenya at an up-scale 4 star hotel in Nairobi where we had a grand breakfast buffet every day. I wanted to mention that because in order to convey the true magnificence of the lunch buffet at the Ol Tukai lodge, I would have to say that the excellent breakfast buffet we had daily was to shame by it. Gammon, mutton shanks so buttery soft that they were melting off the bone, half a dozen different variations of cake and more! Lunch, of course also comes with an excellent view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Lastly, I would like to mention Samuel, our guide. He was always ready to answer our questions no matter how silly it was - I mean he even answered "why are there people selling vegetables on the road?", an actual dumb question I asked. He would give us plenty of time to get our photos and videos and know a lot about the plants, animals and birds - to the point that he even had a couple of ornithological guide books for when he would come across a bird whose name he couldn't immediately remember. He also had a massive store of drinking water - a very important commodity on these safaris. In fact this was the only safari that had drinking water available in the car. The car we had been given was a tourist van with reclinable seats - which allowed us to take a nap whenever we wanted (after the huge lunch, you will need a nap). Perfect Safaris says that the safari takes 8-9 hours but we easily went 90mins over it and Samuel was fine with it. All that said, there are two reasons what made Samuel an excellent guide. Firstly, the tour started at 5am - we actually set off at 4:54am. However, this meant that he had to be on his way from his home at 4am. The tour ended at 11pm (for a reason, I will reveal shortly) and he arrived back at his home at around midnight. This meant that Samuel spent nearly 20 hours with us. At no point, did he ever stop smiling or stop giving us the best experience he could offer us. Secondly, the tour ended so late because of a massive traffic jam on Mombasa Road - which is a road meant to carry freight trucks from the interior of Kenya as well as from Rwanda and Uganda to Mombasa port. For some inexplicable reason this road has a grand two lanes - one for incoming and one for outgoing traffic. Obviously, this ended up causing a massive traffic jam - at one point we moved probably 10kms over 3 hours - which sounds bad but it would have taken maybe two or three times that amount of time without Samuel's excellent driving and crafty maneuvering of traffic. We had a final safari the next day, and instead of going on that we would probably have been in bed without Samuel.
