Overview

Join us at our Quinta for the Traditional Portuguese Cooking Class, where organic farming, local cuisine, and a genuine connection to nature come together to create an extraordinary experience.

Itinerary

Step into the heart of Portuguese culinary magic with our immersive cooking class at Quinta de Louredo in charming Freixo. I'm Alfredo, your guide to the world of organic farming and the beauty of our panoramic farm.

Our journey begins with a farm stroll, connecting with vibrant fruits, veggies, and aromatic herbs. Picture this: a delightful aperitif moment with homegrown olives, fresh bread, and a sip of our refreshing green wine or grape juice.

Celebrate our farm's richness with a tasting experience of our exquisite olive oil. Then, dive into hands-on cooking, crafting a three-course Portuguese feast – fish, farm-fresh meat, or a tasty vegetarian option. Throughout the cooking class, I'll share the wisdom passed down from my beloved grandmother, who instilled in me a deep appreciation for Portuguese cuisine and the simple joys of life.

Join us around the table to savor the flavors of Quinta de Louredo. Consider our day trip package for a full countryside experience. Come, let's cook up joy, flavor, and the rustic charm of our farm together!

From welcome to goodbye a wonderful experience with Alfredo! Thank you for allowing us to see Portuguese life on a farm. We honour you for your hospitality, your cooking skills, your kindness and your ability to use everything on the farm. It was definitely the best day in the Douro Valley!

This was truly one of the highlights of our week long trip to Porto! Having done numerous cooking classes throughout Europe and America, I can wholeheartedly say that Alfredo was one of, if not the, best experiences my wife and I have had. Despite only hosting the two of us on Easter Sunday, Alfredo did not cancel and in fact went out of his way to call us to make sure we had a ride to his place from the train stop! Once there, he welcomed us with wine, cheeses, fava beans, olives, and vino verde (my wife does not drink so he made fresh blueberry juice as well!). Following this, we took a lovely tour of his farm, where we met his 7 rescue dogs (who all adore him) and saw everything from the vineyards to the baby geese and pigs to his beehives. Finally we came back inside to cook 4 very traditional dishes using mostly ingredients from his farm! The meal started with a lovely tomato onion soup that was not only super tasty, but super easy to make. It followed with a dish of codfish, French fries (freshly made from his potatoes) and scrambled eggs (freshly collected from his chickens!). Finally we made a lovely custard dessert as well as a Aletria Doce (a sweet noodle based dessert). We walked off the food and drink along his farm until it was time for our train. Alfredo kindly packed us all the leftovers (which we eagerly consumed over the next few days given how tasty and fresh it was) and dropped us off at the train station before saying good bye. One of the best added benefits was simply sitting and chatting with Alfredo and hearing how his 300 year old farm and house has grown over the years. Hearing about the struggles he has faced in recent times with covid and climate change ruining much of the traditional crops and grapes helped put in perspective why he has opened the cooking experience (to keep finding his farm which he remains passionate about). This was a once in a lifetime experience in the doura valley that I will wholeheartedly recommend to anyone visiting the area!

We enjoyed going to a rural part of Portugal and getting an organic farm tour AND a wonderful cooking class. It’s clear that Alfredo has a deep love for his land and the meals he cooks.

If you want to take a cooking class while in Portugal, this one is as authentic as they come! Located in the Douro Valley, amazing views and peaceful nature surrounding the farm. We took the train from Porto and then a cab from the train station - had no issues getting there. Alfredo is an amazing human being! We booked very last minute and he was able to accommodate us well. Welcomed us onto his farm with open arms. Wine and a 4 course meal was included. Recipes were easy with the capability to do them at home. Along with the food we toured the farm and met all of his animals including the friendliest rescue dogs!! We cannot thank you enough for the wonderful experience.

If I could rate this place 10 Stars, I would⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!! This was thee most AUTHENTIC place/space for a REAL Portuguese experience. It was HUMANISM at its finest, where you’re instantly in a moment of grassroots quick integration of getting to know people in an intimate environment! You need to come to Quinta de Louredo and dive into the moment with Alfredo and his menagerie of farm animals, fruit and vegetable farm, and get a feel of sustainable farming. Located in the Doro Valley, Quinta de Louredo gives you a feel of what life was like 100 years ago. The Tia, aunty, who helped cook, was an elder who cooks in a brick oven in a traditional style, unique to region. The sweet and whole grain breads, fruit spreads, smoked sausage, and salted beans were very scrumptious. Verde wine from the farm, Mika (if available due to Fall harvest), was a refreshing delight the entire time we were there. Reminder everyone, you can ONLY GET VERDE WINE IN PORTUGAL! The end product of a four course meal consisting of green potato soup, turnip/sausage, watercress salad, pork/batatas, custard, and sweet noodles were amazing! Hands down must experience!! I would love to come back during the summer and just help out around the farm and dive into conscience sustainable farming, I’m mind, body, and soul. Mucho mahalo to Alfredo and his ‘Ohana for sharing their paradise with us! 😘😘😘
