Overview

Wouldn't it be fantastic to do an art workshop whilst visiting Provence? We offer a relaxing experience in an authentic and beautiful village, with a qualified teacher who is also a practicing artist. Jean-Louis has degrees in Fine Arts (BA painting major) and teaching (Dip Ed, Art) and 30 years experience teaching art to all ages - so you can be confident that you'll receive expert tuition. We don't need to go far as our plein-air locations are reached by foot, in or around the village. Being an historical and beautiful village Jouques offers many aspects that are inspirational for any artist.
Our one-day workshop at ARTELIER PROVENCE includes studio and outdoor art activities, it can be customised for individuals and small group requirements.
We also offer 4 day residential art retreats with accommodation, 'Art in Provence' or 'Encaustic comes alive', look us up online.
Jouques is an easy 50 minute bus ride from Aix-en-Provence, or 30 minutes by car.

What Can You Expect?

Itinerary

We meet at 9.30am in the atelier for an introduction to art tools and techniques, we talk about drawing and composition, then walk to nearby sites for drawing en-plein-air.
At 12.30pm we break for lunch which is taken at one of the local cafés (not included in fee), then reconvene and work in the atelier from 2pm. Introduction to water-based media and painting techniques. We consider art materials, brushes, style, strategy of working with each medium. You choose your best composition and produce a beautiful painting. We finish around 6pm.

What an amazing day! Sketching outside in the beautiful village of Jouques followed by an afternoon of painting in the studio. Jean-Louis is not only the most incredible artist but also a brilliant teacher being so knowledgeable and supportive. Such a friendly atmosphere in Jean- Louis and Fiona’s home. An amazing memory for me and my aunt.

A wonderful week in the heart of Provence. It has always been a dream of mine to paint in Provence inspired by the landscapes, light and architecture that has inspired so many of the great Masters. My week staying in Jouques attending the Artelier Provence Oil Encaustic workshop allowed me to fulfil my dream. Jean Louis is an amazing teacher, so patient and insightful on all aspects of painting and drawing. His wife, Fiona is lovely. Both welcome guests openly into their beautiful Provence village home, which is spacious, comfortable and well located within an authentic and beautiful Provence village. I would highly recommend adding this art course to your itinerary if your travels take you to France. You won’t be disappointed. Suitable for anyone who loves art, or who wants to be inspired for future art projects. A truly immersive , educational and joyous experience. I feel privileged to have had the experience.

My husband and I had a wonderful time sketching outdoors and painting in the studio for a day with Jean-Louis, who is clearly an experienced teacher. The historic house is beautifully redone by Jean-Louis and Fiona, and they were great hosts. I would definitely recommend this activity to any couple on vacation and would also consider the longer art retreats in the future.

I am very grateful to have found Artelier Provence during my recent June visit to the area. I attended a one-day workshop at the home of Jean-Louis and Fiona. The morning was spent sketching in the open air in the beautiful town of Jouques under the expert guidance of Jean-Louis. The afternoon was spent in Jean-Louis's studio transforming a favourite sketch from the morning into a painting that I am not only proud of, but that will serve as a permanent reminder of a perfect day and the highlight of my stay in Provence. Jean-Louis is an outstanding teacher, who generously shares his knowledge with you - I gained a better understanding of the colour wheel, both its warm and cool colour combinations, and learned how to tackle a subject using different media and working from darks to lights. The goals and assurances that Artelier Provence make on their website are spot on - I left the day with greater confidence in my ability and a renewed commitment to carry on painting. And the warm welcome I received from both Jean-Louis and Fiona will never be forgotten. I cannot recommend Artelier Provence highly enough. I certainly hope to return!
