Overview

The San Diego Zoo is a 100-acre wildlife park and home to over 12,000 rare and endangered animals, representing more than 650 species and subspecies. Located just north of downtown San Diego in Balboa Park, the Zoo is also an accredited botanical garden, caring for more than 700,000 individual plants, including a prominent curated assemblage of close to 13,000 specimens, representing 3,100 species.

The expansive new 3.2-acre Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is designed to appeal to all ages and foster empathy for wildlife by exploring nature. Built on the site of the historic Children’s Zoo, the basecamp features fresh and innovative elements, including eight buildings and habitats dispersed throughout four different habitat zones: Rainforest, Wild Woods, Marsh Meadows and Desert Dunes.

Tickets must be purchased at least one day prior to visit.

Everything about the San Diego Zoo is magical. The natural habitats are so respectful of the animals and provides a sense of connection to their experience. The diversity is incredible, and the entire set up is well planned and organized.

If you’re contemplating visiting the zoo, just stop. This is hands down the best zoo I’ve ever been to. I went with my kids but I’d visit without them. I can’t say that about any other zoo I’ve been to.

Amazing experience. Staff was friendly. Super clean. Lines went fast. Easy to navigate. Animals looked happy and healthy and there was so much information on each one. Really enjoyed eating at Alberts by the gorillas! Easy to spend 2 days there.

We went on a busy Saturday and had a very nice time. Big zoo and Powell designed. $74 admission is a bit crazy though. Nice time.

San Diego Zoo is amazing. There's so much to see. We started with the free bus tour, which gave a nice overview of the park. Later in the afternoon we had purchased the Discovery cart 30 minute tour. There were just eight people on the cart with the very informative driver/tour guide. It gives you a bit of a behind-the-scenes tour. I highly recommend that.We also thoroughly enjoyed taking the Skyfari Aerial Tram. It's a short three minute ride on the tram, but you're above the treetops and can see everything. The zoo requires a lot of walking and there's several places that have inclines and declines on the pathways.
