Overview

• Visit Slovakia´s capital, Bratislava
• Go walking in the wild Tatras
• See glacial lakes and tumbling waterfalls
• Visit traditional mountain huts

This guided walking holiday in Slovakia starts in Bratislava and explores the best spots in the Tatras. Once you’ve arrived in Slovakia’s capital and seen some of the city’s highlights, you’ll go on a journey to see lofty peaks, deep glacial valleys, lakes, waterfalls and traditional mountain huts.

You’ll hike to the summit of Velka Svistovka (2038m) for panoramic views, stop for a taste of hearty Slovakian food on a day’s hiking between traditional mountain huts, and soak up the tranquillity of crystal-clear lakes and forested valleys on varied mountain walks.

As the walking is at your own pace, you can pause to take photos as many times as you wish, or stop for coffee and a snack at one of the hospitable mountain huts along the way. Each day you’ll return to a comfortable hotel in the mountain village of Tatranska Lomnica.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Bratislava, Slovakia´s capital.

Stop At: Bratislava Old Town, Bratislava Slovakia
Today you’ll fly to Bratislava – or Vienna, if you prefer – and we’ll provide a free group transfer to your hotel. Your tour leader will meet you when you get there and run you through the essentials.

At 5PM, they’ll take you on a guided walk through Bratislava’s old town. See if you can spot Bratislava Castle – thanks to its position on top of the hill it’s hard to miss. And keep an eye out for somewhere nice to eat, because you’ll have the evening free to head off for dinner.

It’s a good idea to arrange your flight with plenty of time to get to your hotel before the walking tour, but if you can’t make it for this time don’t worry – your guide will leave a note for you in the hotel’s reception and you can join the group later on.

Our base for the week will be Tatranska Lomnica, one of the most popular villages in the Tatras, and the perfect starting point for many popular walking trails.

In the afternoon you’ll be taken on an introductory walk in the village to get to know your surroundings.

Stop At: Skalnate pleso, Vysoke Tatry Slovakia
After a good breakfast, you’ll take a cable car ride to the mountain lake of Skalnate Pleso (1751m). This crystal-clear lake is surrounded by forested hills and towering granite peaks, and there’s an astronomical and meteorological observatory near the top, which you’ll have time to look around.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Zelene pleso, Vysoke Tatry Slovakia
Velka Svistovka (2,037m) is next on our route, well-known for its high concentration of Tatra chamois. Endemic to the High and Low Tatras, Tatra chamois are a rare subspecies of the chamois. It’s thought that there are only about 600 left. They often wander around in this alpine terrain, close to where you will be walking.

The trail is secured by chains on a few of the more difficult sections, but the mountain provides an accessible and gratifying climb. From the summit of Velka Svistovka, make your descent to the Zelene Pleso Hut secured by chains. Located at the glacier lake of the same name this is an absolutely beautiful spot for lunch.

From Zelene Pleso you’ll continue to Biela Voda, then take a public bus back to Tatranska Lomnica, which is only about 10 minutes away.

After breakfast you´ll take a mountain tram to Stary ´old´ Smokovec, the oldest village in the Tatras, followed by a funicular to Hrebienok (1285m) the starting point of our walk.

Today you’ll hike through the Studena Dolina Valley. From its narrow beginnings, the valley gradually gets wider; terraces harbouring mountain lakes tower above. Pause and enjoy the sight of colourful flowers, scent of pine trees and sound of rare birds singing in the mountains as you traverse the valley.

The valley leads you up to Zbojnicka, or ´Robbers´, Hut, where you can enjoy a traditional lunch of soup and dumplings. Zbonicka (‘robbers’) Hut is one of the highest at an altitude of (1,960m) and still a popular base for trekkers. Its name harks back to the days when it was a hunters’ hut, and poachers used to stalk the valley.

Your hike ends where it started, at Hrebienok. From here, you take a funicular and tram back to your hotel and a well-earned dinner!

Your route will also take you via Cold Creek Waterfalls. These waterfalls start where the Great Cold Creek meets the Small Cold Creek and tumble their way over rocks and boulders, and through pine forests. Walking trails will take you alongside the fizzy cascades.

After three days of walking this day is left free to relax. You can visit one of the water parks in the foothills of the Tatras offering indoor and outdoor thermal pools and wellness centres.

Hiring an E-bike is also an option if you want to explore the surroundings on a bike. If you’re a cave lover, then Belianska Cave should be on your list, too.

Cultural trips are also nearby. Spissky Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and dates back to the 12th century. Located on a hilltop above the town of Spisske Podhradie and Zehra village, it was built as the political, administrative, economic and cultural centre of the region.

Levoca is renowned for its authentic and well-preserved architectural profiles of the old medieval town. Explore the historic centre, including the museum and St. James’ church, with the highest wooden altar in the world.

We have some great trips to choose from and can certainly help you to plan and book them – your guide will be there to help.

Day 7: Walk through the Mlynicka and Furkotska Valleys to Skok Waterfall and Soliskom Hut (1840m).

Stop At: Lake in village Strbske Pleso, Vysoke Tatry 05985 Slovakia
After a day of relaxation we have a long but amazing day ahead of us trekking through the Mlynicka and Furkotska Valleys.

Today’s trek starts with a tram journey through the Tatras’ most famous settlements to Strbske Pleso (1347m), Slovakia´s highest village and home to a beautiful glacial lake. The village is one of the most popular destinations in Slovakia as it provides many kilometres of hiking routes and the chance to admire the lake itself.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Furkotská dolina, 059 85 Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia
From here, you´ll follow a trail to Skok waterfall. The hiking trail is waymarked and leads you along a road to the peace and tranquillity of the pine-forested Mlynicka Valley. From here, a stony path squeezes you through hairpin turns to the foot of the waterfall, which drops 25m from the rocky ledge above. We think they are one of the High Tatras’ top ten attractions, because the cascading waters are beautiful as they tumble down the mountain into the pools below. We can make a stop here, maybe dipping your feet into the refreshing water while enjoying a picnic!
Duration: 4 hours

Stop At: Predne Solisko, Strbske Pleso 05985 Slovakia
Continuing through the valleys, and passing a number of smaller glacial lakes, you’ll reach Pod Soliskom Hut, one of the newer mountain chalets in the region. From here you can enjoy far-reaching views of the Low Tatras.

Descend to Strbske Pleso by cable car, and then by tram to your hotel at Tatranska Lomnica.

Bear in mind that today´s route also involves trekking through sections that are secured with chains, and you’ll need a head for heights.
