Overview

We will meet on Nilaveli beach (once the booking is confirmed, the location on maps will be shared with you) and usually the boat ride to pigeon island takes between 10 to 15 minutes. Upon arrival you will be provided by the snorkeling equipment such as mask, gear and fins (life jackets are available). In the shallow water around the national park, you may able to easily spot tropical fish and other marine creatures such as Sea turtles, Blacktip sharks. etc - very common in this region (don’t worry, they are harmless and staying calm and observe them will give you a satisfactory experience). The water is shallow and completely safe for beginners. But our experience guide will be there for you to guide though the whole experience (in order to bring you to the best spots). You are free to relax on the island’s sandy beach at your own pace and at the end of experience, we will drop you back to Nilaveli beach along with the memories grabbed across this experience..

Pigeon Island National Park is one of the two marine national parks of Sri Lanka. The national park is situated 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, a coastal town in the Eastern Province, encompassing a total area of 471.429 hectares. The island's name derives from the rock pigeon which has colonized it. The national park contains some of the best remaining coral reefs of Sri Lanka.

They have a few black tips sharks around and if lucky you could see a turtle is not worthy the price.

A nice experience but please temper your expectations. Took a boat from Nilaveli beach to the island. Becareful of the boat man you get. Despite being told he spoke English he plainly didn’t and didn’t explain to us where we could and could not snorkel. All he did was shout at us which is far from the experience we wanted. Originally told we could only swim in a 20m by 20m area, once 10 boat loads of locals turned up we were obviously allowed to go anywhere as they were doing it! One rule for one and one rule for the other is not the way to entice tourists to your location. There is a fair amount of sea life to see, but visibility was poor that day due to overcast conditions. Alot of dead coral as well so wear slippers or wet shoes. From what I’ve heard there are better places to snorkel around her.
