Pass By: Tallinn, Tallinn, Harju County

Drive through different districts of Tallinn to grasp better the possibilities outside the Old Town.

Stop At: Haapsalu Old Town, Karja tn, Haapsalu Estonia

The calm and friendly small town of Haapsalu, located less than 2-hour’s drive from the capital, enjoys a long standing history as a spa resort. Modern Haapsalu hosts a number of international festivals and is home to charming restaurants. Haapsalu is a wonderful little town with narrow streets, a miniature town hall and romantic wooden dwelling houses. On the romantic seaside promenade stands Kuursaal, one of the finest wooden buildings in Estonia. Once in Haapsalu, don’t forget to browse for a traditional hand-woven woollen Haapsalu shawl with fine and elegant patterns.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Haapsalu Castle, Lossiplats 3, Haapsalu 90502 Estonia

A recently renovated museum introducing the medieval history of the castle. Haapsalu Castle is an architectural pearl built in the 13th century, which until the end of the 17th century was the seat of power of the local authorities. This is one of the best-preserved castles in Estonia and home to the most famous ghost in Estonia – the White Lady!

Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Spithami, Spithami, Laane County

Located north of the coastal town of Haapsalu, Noarootsi peninsula appeal to travellers with their untouched nature and Scandinavian feel. Coastal Swedes inhabited these western Estonian areas for hundreds of years, leaving behind a wealth of history and traditions. Home to Estonia’s oldest and smallest wooden church, it borders three nature reserve areas, a safe haven for local flora and fauna. The Noarootsi peninsula draws in visitors also for its beautiful sandy beach, pine tree forest and is considered one of the best places for birdwatching in Estonia. Nõva Nature Reserve is a beautiful quiet place in the summertime and quite busy with bird-watchers during migratory seasons in the spring and autumn.

Duration: 1 hour

Pass By: Cape Pakri, Majaka tee 47, Paldiski 76806 Estonia

Paldiski, located on the Pakri Peninsula, was one of the most important army bases for both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Come and see for yourself how the town, which used to be a closed Soviet nuclear submarine study centre, has changed. Also worth a visit are the main building of the Paldiski train station, which is the best preserved station building in Estonia (closest to the original building). For a long time, the Pakri Peninsula was closed off for the general public as it was used by the Soviet Army. This has lent a certain mystique to the place and given way to a lot of legends. Among other treats, visitors come here for the limestone cliffs and a unique lighthouse.

Stop At: Padise Abbey, SA Padise Muuseumid, Padise Estonia

After the recently completed thorough restoration, the monastery is open to visitors again. The monastery was built by the Cistercians in the 14th century and is the only preserved Cistercian monastery in Northern Europe.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Keila Waterfall, Keila-Joa Alevik, Keila Estonia

On the way back to Tallinn we’ll pass one beautiful waterfall and take a stroll around the river. Keila waterfall is the third largest waterfall in Estonia; after the Narva and Jägala waterfalls. There is a road from the park along the riverbed, crossing two suspension bridges, to the waterfall.

An easy day-trip from Tallinn is an all-day drive from Tallinn west to Haapsalu. And a great way to do it is with Juhan as your guide. He is an excellent host with in-depth knowledge about almost everything Estonian - history, culture, nature, etc. The tour is the “Go West – Private 1 Day Trip to West Coast”. Highlights include a visit to Haapsalu town, Haapsalu Castle, the Haapsalu Promenade (a pretty stretch of waterfront), and stops (either on the way to Haapsalu or on the way back to Tallinn) at Noarootsi Peninsula and Nõva Nature Reserve, the 1731 Nova wooden church, 14th century Padise Abbey, Paldiski and Pakri Peninsula and lighthouse, Spithami Lighthouse, and Keila Waterfall. Haapsalu is full of lovely old and photogenic wooden houses and shops. Along the drive you'll see quite a few old Soviet military installations. On the particular day we were in Haapsalu, the town was hosting its annual “American Beauty Car Show”. Hundreds of classic American cars on display and driving all around town. A great bonus to a wonderful five-star day, led by Juhan.

My wife and I cannot even begin to tell you what an amazing tour we had with Juhan. The area is absolutely gorgeous and Juhan did a great job introducing the area to us. As students of history, one of the things we enjoyed most about our tour was all of the commentary and historical context he provided while we were driving around. We learned history on our tour, thus a "histourical" trip with "Professor Juhan." Though unlike those boring professors you had in university, Juhan is very personable, thoughtful and funny. A very entertaining and insightful tour - we highly recommend it!

I really enjoyed this trip. Juhan was very gentle with us. We could see this part of this country with him and discover wonderful places and learn about the Estonian history. Without him it wasn’t be the same. He did this trip really enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this trip. Juhan is a very thoughtful guide and always cared about our needs during the trip, even if we wanted to alter the trip during the day. He possesses a wide knowledge of his country customs and culture, always with an answer to all my questions. The trip was very well planed with so many things to do and see packed into one day, and good historical introductions to every part of the trip. We visited a lovely little town on the coast with a marvelous castle, visited a beach where I had my first bath at the baltic sea, and went to a fascinating lighthouse. I now think to have a very better idea of the country, I really recommend to other travelers to visit more places other than Tallinn. The van/car used was really spacious and comfy. I can really recommend this company as it offers good value.
