Overview

Kintsugi is a simple restoration technique that uses gold or other metal powder to repair broken, chipped, or cracked pieces. Kintsugi has been handed down in Japan from ancient times, and the culture of taking good care of things has attracted attention worldwide.
Kintsugi lacquer comes from the poison oak tree or black tree of the poison ivy family. When dried, lacquer is a natural adhesive that is harmless to the human body and has a hardening effect.
Using a vessel made by Nakano Taku-sensei, a master of kintsugi, he will teach you how to kintsugi using traditional and authentic materials. Join us for a special lesson using genuine lacquer and pure gold powder!
Cracks are considered a landscape in kintsugi, and the joint is decorated with gold, silver, or other metal powder. Kintsugi is based on not pretending that the cracks have never existed but considering them part of the item's history and breathing new life into it.

Itinerary

The workshop comes with exquisite pottery hand-crafted by Master Taku and carefully selected materials so that you can learn the sense of Wabi-Sabi. The vessel has been soaked in rustic lacquer to have a secular enhancement(Sabi-feeling).
Master Taka teaches you the process of the Authentic KIntsugi technique with real Usurhi lacquer and pure gold powder.
Let’s create imperfect beauty (Wabi) with Kintsugi.
You can take it home on the day!

Note:Studio offers gloves to wear and protect from irritants in traditional Japanese Urushi lacquer. Please follow the direction and precautions to avoid rash from the Urushi lacquer.
The studio can not be responsible for the incident if you touch lacquer.

Though we got list and arrived 15 minutes late, Master Taku was gracious and welcoming. My friend was perspiring profusely and he picked up a laminated card and fanned her to cool down! He’s a wonderfully calm and encouraging teacher, who knows his craft well. Lived the session! My first time and am anxious to start at home!

Great experience! Learned Japanese tradition of making broken pottery perfect again. Taku was very patient and helpful with our children, 5 and 7 years old, and the instructional videos were great to follow along as well. Highly recommend!

This was such a fun, intense experience. My husband had no idea what we were going to do. We both really loved it. We came away with two pieces to give to our daughters for them to treasure. It may seem pricy, but it was well worth it. Don’t forget to get a small piece on a chain from the bowls near the back as an extra souvenir for leaving a review. Master Taku is superb at explaining each step. Wish I could do this at home.

This was such a fun workshop and provided a genuine Japanese souvenir to treasure and remember our trip. Taku was excellent in his instruction, encouragement and assistance to ensure you took home some beautiful kintsugi. Taku’s boots were AWESOME!
